Custom Health Holdings Inc (TSX:CHLT) earlier this week highlighted its pharmacy acquisition strategy and second-quarter revenue growth as CEO Shane Bishop outlined how the company plans to combine inorganic expansion with organic growth across its technology-enabled healthcare model.
Speaking with Proactive, Bishop said Custom Health was acquiring pharmacies in key North American geographies where it could connect existing patient populations with its in-home medication-dispensing technology and clinical services.
The company reported 70% revenue growth in the second quarter. Bishop attributed the performance to its acquisition strategy, noting that the reported numbers included only one month of contribution from pharmacies acquired as part of the company's listing.
"We've kind of set ourselves up now for a consistent quarter over quarter growth, which I'm very excited about," Bishop said.
A potential catalyst is the company's announced acquisition of another pharmacy in Wisconsin. Bishop said Custom Health expects to have a revenue run rate of about US$130 million following completion of that transaction.
Bishop described the locations being acquired as strategic and said the model was intended to combine accretive inorganic growth from acquisitions with organic growth generated by the company's patient population.
Custom Health is specifically targeting closed-door, non-retail pharmacies rather than conventional storefront operations. Bishop described these as automated factory- or warehouse-style facilities focused on accurately and efficiently packaging prescriptions using packaging automation and vision-checking technologies.
The company then overlays its clinical services onto those operations. Its in-home medication-dispensing technology collects patient data multiple times each day, which is reviewed by its clinical team. Bishop said recommendations and data can subsequently be integrated into physician electronic health records.
The ability to scale acquired pharmacies by directing patients into them represents another element of the growth strategy outlined in the interview.
Bishop also pointed to Custom Health's move to public trading as an important development because of the resulting access to capital.
He said the listing was "giving us access to the capital that we require to nail down this business plan and move it forward," adding that it should allow the company to continue pursuing consistent growth over the coming quarters.
