A 38-year-old man says he recently discovered that his wife had accumulated $65,000 across four credit cards over several years, much of it on clothing and boutique purchases she never mentioned. When he brought up the balance and said the family needed a real repayment plan, her sister told him he was "overreacting" and should just "let her enjoy things."
Wanting a plan for $65,000 in credit card debt isn't unreasonable. At the Federal Reserve's 22.15% average rate for credit card accounts assessed interest in the second quarter of 2026, $65,000 would generate roughly $14,400 in interest over a year if the balance remained unchanged and the rate stayed constant.

The actual cost would vary based on the interest rates and terms of the four cards, but the basic problem is clear: carrying a large revolving balance at a high interest rate can make it difficult to make meaningful progress.
Why This Isn't About Punishing Anyone
A repayment plan doesn't have to be a punishment. The immediate goal is to stop the balance from continuing to accumulate interest and establish a realistic path toward paying it down.
The couple also has a separate issue to address: why the spending happened without one spouse knowing about it and how they'll handle discretionary spending going forward.
Those conversations don't have to turn into an argument over every boutique purchase. The more productive question is what the household can realistically afford to pay each month and which strategy will reduce the debt most efficiently.
The Real Cost of Doing Nothing
Making only minimum payments can keep credit card debt around for years. The exact payoff period depends on the card issuer's minimum-payment formula, interest rate and how the balance changes over time. Credit card issuers generally calculate minimum payments using formulas that can include a percentage of the balance, interest and fees, or a fixed minimum amount.

That's why the couple needs more than a promise to "spend less." They need to know the balances, interest rates and minimum payments on all four cards and decide how much they can consistently put toward the debt.
They also need to determine whether the spending itself needs to change. Paying down the existing balance while continuing to add new charges would only move the problem around.
A Plan Doesn't Have To Mean Four Separate Payments
One option is debt consolidation. A consolidation loan replaces multiple debts with a new loan and can simplify payments and potentially reduce the interest rate if the borrower qualifies for favorable terms. But a lower rate isn't guaranteed, and borrowers need to compare the new rate, fees and repayment period with the existing debts.
Another option is a debt-relief program. These programs work differently from consolidation loans and can involve negotiating with creditors to resolve eligible unsecured debts. The right approach depends on the couple's income, credit, ability to make payments and overall financial situation.
There can also be tax consequences if debt is ultimately forgiven. The IRS generally considers canceled debt taxable income, although certain exclusions and exceptions can apply.
Getting Everyone On The Same Page
Accredited Debt Relief provides a free consultation to review a person's debt, income and monthly obligations and explain available debt-relief and consolidation options. The company says its consultation is free and carries no obligation, and that it evaluates both debt-relief programs and consolidation-loan options depending on the person's circumstances.
For this couple, getting the numbers on paper may be more productive than arguing about whether asking for a repayment plan is "controlling." They can see exactly what they owe, what different options would cost and how long each path could take.
He's asked his wife to sit in on the consultation call together. She hasn't said yes yet, but she also hasn't said no.
