Canadian retail sales rise 0.6% in June, e-commerce jumps 9.9%

Retail sales in Canada rose 0.6% to C$74.3bn ($53.67bn) in June 2026, with seven of nine sub-sectors recording higher sales, according to Statistics Canada.

Core retail sales, which exclude gasoline stations and fuel vendors, as well as motor vehicle and parts dealers, increased 1.2% during the month, marking their second consecutive monthly rise.

Seasonally adjusted retail e-commerce sales climbed 9.9% to C$5.7bn in June.

Online sales accounted for 7.7% of total retail trade, compared with 7.1% in May.

General merchandise retailers posted a 2.7% increase while sales at clothing, clothing accessories, jewellery, leather goods, luggage and shoe retailers climbed 3.1%.

Food and beverage retailers were the only core retail category to record a decline, with sales down 0.4%.

Supermarkets and other grocery retailers, excluding convenience retailers, saw sales fall 0.6%, following a 0.8% increase in May.

Sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers rose 1% for a third consecutive month.

Gasoline stations and fuel vendors recorded the sharpest fall, with sales declining 4.1% and ending a four-month period of increases.

In volume terms, however, sales at these retailers rose 4.2%.

Overall retail sales increased 1.5% in volume terms in June.

For the second quarter, retail sales grew 2.2% while sales volumes increased 0.4%.

Seven provinces reported higher retail sales in June.

Ontario posted the largest increase in dollar terms, with sales rising 1.6%, supported by stronger sales at general merchandise retailers.

Retail sales in the Toronto census metropolitan area increased 3.9%. Quebec recorded a 0.5% increase while sales in Montréal rose 1.0%.

Alberta registered the largest provincial decline, with retail sales falling 1.3%, mainly because of reduced sales at gasoline stations and fuel vendors.

Statistics Canada's advance estimate points to a 0.8% decline in retail sales in July.
