Coinbase Debuts Tokenized Stocks On Base Network

Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase Global (NASDAQ: $COIN) has debuted tokenized stocks on its Base blockchain network.

Coinbase joins rival exchanges Kraken and Binance in the race to bring stock trading onchain.

In a statement, Coinbase said that investors can now trade tokenized versions of stock such as Apple (NASDAQ: $AAPL), Nvidia (NASDAQ: $NVDA), and Alphabet (NASDAQ: $GOOGL).

The tokens are available to eligible investors outside the U.S. and represent shares held 1:1. Coinbase said more tokenized stocks will be available in the coming weeks and months.

Base is a secure, low-cost Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain network run by Coinbase Global.

Tokenized stocks are a digital representation of a traditional share in a company that's placed on a blockchain. It tracks the spot price of a real stock.

The tokenization of equities is gathering steam on Wall Street, with banks and asset managers having moved tens of billions of dollars of U.S. Treasuries, private credit, and investment funds onchain.

Citigroup (NYSE: $C) has forecast that tokenized securities could be $5.5 trillion U.S. market by 2030.

Coinbase Global said its tokenized stocks represent a direct claim on the underlying stock the token is meant to represent. Dividends and stock splits are also reflected in the tokens.

Investors can hold tokenized versions of stock in self-custody wallets and trade them around the clock on Coinbase's Base blockchain.

COIN stock has declined 41% in the past 12 months to trade at $180.35 U.S. per share.
