Happy Thursday. Stocks were mixed as investors weighed earnings reports from Nvidia (NVDA), Salesforce (CRM) and CrowdStrike (CRWD) ahead of the Fed's meeting in Jackson Hole.

Nvidia rose 7% in premarket trading after the AI chipmaker reported better-than-expected fiscal second-quarter results and issued revenue guidance that topped Wall Street estimates.

Salesforce jumped 11.2%, while CrowdStrike gained 9%.

"Nvidia once again delivered stronger-than-expected results, providing some reassurance that the AI investment cycle remains intact," said Daniela Hathorn, senior market analyst at Capital.com.

Hathorn said the macroeconomic backdrop is more finely balanced, with core PCE inflation remaining stuck at 3.3%, "reinforcing the idea that disinflation has stalled rather than reversed."

"Combined with recent weakness in employment, that probably strengthens the case for the Fed to keep rates on hold in September rather than tighten immediately," Hathorn said.

"However, inflation remains too high for policymakers to become comfortable, leaving markets waiting for Kevin Warsh's first Jackson Hole speech tomorrow for clues on how he intends to navigate the tension between softer growth and persistent price pressures."

Stocks closed slightly lower yesterday, pressured by hotter-than-expected inflation data and investor caution ahead of Nvidia's earnings report.
