Key Takeaways

  • An anonymous British investor has recovered dozens of Bitcoin worth about £3.3 million after losing access to the funds in 2014.

  • The story is different from James Howells, whose 8,000 BTC may remain locked behind a private key on a hard drive buried in a Welsh landfill.

  • Glassnode says Bitcoin's 26% recovery has been backed by ETF demand and broad wallet accumulation.

An anonymous British man has recovered dozens of Bitcoin worth approximately £3.3 million, 12 years after the failure of an early crypto exchange left him unable to reach the funds.

The investor, identified only as Chris, recovered the assets after lawyers assembled evidence showing that the Bitcoin held through Intersango belonged to him, according to an exclusive report from LBC.

His case offers a rare happy ending in a sector that is so often littered with inaccessible fortunes.

It also comes as Bitcoin approaches an area where Glassnode says long-held coins and liquidation levels could combine to slow its rebound above $80,000.

Lost £4,000 Bitcoin Account Returns a £3.3M Fortune

Chris entered the market in 2011 after a friend persuaded him that Bitcoin could become significant.

He began cautiously, putting £1,500 into it through Intersango, a platform previously known as Britcoin and among the earliest Bitcoin exchanges serving UK customers.

However, the exchange ran into trouble.

By the time its website disappeared in 2014, Chris had already tried to withdraw his holdings but found that his account was frozen.

The balance was then worth around £4,000.

Repeated attempts to reach the company produced no result, and Chris eventually assumed the coins were gone.

According to LBC, he even dismissed emails sent by two of Intersango's founders in 2018 because he suspected they were fraudulent.

His wife persuaded him to try again this year, leading him to approach CEL Solicitors.

The firm's financial litigation director, Ryan Sweetnam, gathered records to establish Chris's ownership and prepared documentation for proceedings in the US.

Sweetnam told LBC that the case was ultimately resolved through negotiations rather than a hearing before a judge.

Within months, dozens of Bitcoin were transferred into an account controlled by Chris.

The transfer turned a £4,000 balance he had written off 12 years earlier into an accessible fortune worth approximately £3.3 million, making him a multimillionaire.

Now that the coins are finally under his control, Chris plans to keep some in Bitcoin while cashing out part of the holdings to improve his family's living arrangements.

His recovery may not be an isolated case.

LBC reported that litigation involving Intersango's three founders had included allegations that one of them holds approximately 5,500 BTC, with at least some of those coins potentially owed to former customers.

However, former users would still need sufficient records to prove ownership, and Sweetnam warned that recovering the assets can be a lengthy process.

Not Every Lost Bitcoin Fortune Comes Back

Chris's recovery differs in one crucial respect from many of crypto's best-known lost-fortune stories — his coins were held through a company.

James Howells faces a far more physical problem.

The Welsh computer engineer says a hard drive containing the private keys to 8,000 BTC was mistakenly discarded in 2013 and taken to a landfill in Newport.

At Bitcoin's current price, the inaccessible holding would be worth roughly $638 million.

Howells has spent more than a decade trying to secure permission to excavate the site.

His proposals have included specialist sorting equipment, AI, and a commitment to fund the search privately while sharing part of any recovery with the local community.

Newport City Council has repeatedly refused, pointing to environmental risks and the legal complications of disturbing the landfill.

A High Court judge dismissed Howells' claim in January 2025 after concluding that it had no realistic prospect of succeeding at trial.

After the council revealed plans to close and cap the site, Howells said he had discussed buying the landfill with investment partners.

BTC Rebound Runs Into Supply Wall

While Chris has regained control of coins that were inaccessible to him for more than a decade, Bitcoin's broader market is approaching a cluster of potential sellers.

In an Aug. 26 market report, Glassnode said Bitcoin's 26% rally from its mid-August low began with the largest single-day short-selling liquidation event in its dataset, which dates back to 2019.

Short positions accounted for 85% of liquidations during the squeeze, while the rally cleared 86% of the estimated liquidation clusters along its route.

Glassnode also found evidence of demand beyond the derivatives market.

US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $2.23 billion in creations across seven consecutive inflow days, their strongest seven-day intake of 2026.

Meanwhile, all six wallet-size groups tracked by the firm had a 30-day Accumulation Trend Score at or above its neutral level.

However, the market now faces its clearest test since the rebound began.

The heaviest on-chain supply sits between $83,000 and $86,000 and consists almost entirely of coins held by long-term investors through the drawdown.

A return to that range could give those holders an opportunity to exit at or near their original acquisition price.

Order books point in the same direction.

Resting asks positioned above the market increased 41% over five days, while visible bids declined 32% over seven days.

Although those orders can be canceled, they indicate that more traders are preparing to sell into further strength.

Together, the indicators form a broader resistance band between $81,000 and $86,000.
