I’m a Financial Advisor: Retired Boomers Should Never Use Autopay for These 3 Bills

Everyone loves putting bills on autopay. It's simple and easy, and it doesn't require remembering due dates or locating your credit card—money is deducted directly from your account each month so you're freed up to focus on other things. Like LeBron going to the Philadelphia Seventy-Sixers.
Unfortunately, autopay is not always a good idea—particularly for certain kinds of bills. And particularly for seniors living on a fixed income who may wind up getting overcharged.
Frederick Saide, retirement income planner and managing director atMoneyMattersUSA, broke down the three types of bills for which he never recommends retired boomers use autopay.
Medical Bills
Billing errors are extremely common. And, as Saide explained, paying a bill prior to realizing the error kills your negotiating leverage. This is why automatically deducting money from your account prior to reviewing medical bills can be costly.
"Hospitals discount unpaid balances but rarely refund collected ones, and you should never pay before the Explanation of Benefits (EOB) matches anyway," stated Saide. Put yourself in the driver's seat and never put medical bills on autopay.
Property Taxes
Saide stated that a larger than usual property tax bill can help indicate further action should be taken to help lower it:
"A jump means it's time to appeal the assessment or check eligibility for senior relief programs, and those windows close fast," according to the planner. Therefore, not realizing the jump until much later means you're stuck paying more than necessary.
Instead of allowing unfettered access to your bank account, retired boomers should pause and review these bills. Appeal the assessment if the assessed value is more than the market value, there are factual errors in the property description or similar nearby homes have recently sold for much less.
Insurance Premiums
Insurance premiums should always be reviewed annually to ensure coverage meets your needs. This applies to car insurance, home insurance, umbrella insurance, long-term care policies, and more.
Saide explained autopay plus autorenewal takes advantage of certain "lazy" or loyal customers who aren't paying attention to their recently increased premiums or who simply don't want to spend energy shop around. For this reason, retired boomers should stay vigilant and regularly review premiums to make sure coverage is both adequate and competitive with other carriers.
