Türkiye imposes new hedge fund limits – report

Türkiye's capital markets regulator has introduced restrictions on hedge fund holdings, including limits on investments in related companies and highly concentrated positions, reported Bloomberg citing the regulators statement.

The rules set maximum holdings based on an issuer's publicly tradable shares.

Depending on the company's free-float ratio, hedge funds may hold between 2% and 8% of those shares.

Hedge funds will also be unable to place more than 20% of their assets in securities issued by companies affiliated with, or controlled by, their management.

The regulator has further limited large individual positions.

Securities representing more than 5% of a fund's assets, taken together, cannot account for over 20% of the portfolio.

Funds have been given until 31 December to bring their portfolios into line with the requirements.

Holdings above the limits must be reduced by at least one-third by 31 October and by at least two-thirds by 30 November.

The measures follow concerns over possible manipulation in Turkey's capital markets, noted the publication.

Certain funds have held significant control over trading liquidity in stocks with limited market activity, alongside strong returns for investment funds and sharp rises in some shares.

This has led to questions over whether prices may be being raised artificially or whether transactions between related accounts could be affecting valuations, the report said.

Previous rules placed single-stock limits on equity-focused funds according to fund size but did not cover hedge funds.

Bloomberg News reported earlier this month that Türkiye's largest mutual funds had called for stricter action, citing the possibility of exclusion from major equity benchmarks.
