Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. signed a joint development agreement on Monday to standardize core electronic control units and software for their next-generation software-defined vehicles, the companies said.

Under the deal, the two automakers will work together to establish common specifications for multiple core ECUs within the electrical and electronic architecture of next-generation vehicles, along with the in-vehicle operating system, key parts of the middleware, and vehicle control software, the companies said. The jointly developed architecture is planned for use in both companies' vehicles beginning in fiscal year 2029.

Software-defined vehicles rely on software rather than mechanical hardware to deliver and update their capabilities and features, according to the Associated Press.

The agreement follows a merger attempt between the two companies that did not go through, according to the Wall Street Journal. Nissan and Honda began talks in 2024 to work together on electric vehicles and automotive intelligence technology.

The companies said they identified the software domain as a priority for collaboration given the speed of technological change and the need to improve research and development efficiency. By standardizing these underlying technologies, the two automakers aim to cut development costs and achieve greater economies of scale, the companies said.

Honda and Nissan each operate in the shadow of Toyota Motor Corp., Japan's dominant automaker, and the collaboration may give both companies a stronger footing against their larger rival, according to the Associated Press. On the other side of the globe, European manufacturers Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis have joined forces on software so their vehicles can run on a unified operating system.

The two companies also said they intend to look beyond software, with plans to pursue joint work on goals such as achieving carbon neutrality and making their vehicles safer on the road.
