Anthropic agrees to $35bn cloud contract with Lambda

Anthropic has entered into a cloud-computing agreement valued at $35bn with Lambda, a cloud provider supported by Nvidia, Reuters reported, citing a source familiar with the matter.
The deal covers a data centre project in Nueces County, Texas, developed by Hut 8, a company that has shifted from cryptocurrency mining to operating AI data centres.
The planned facility is expected to provide about 350MW of capacity, according to a source who requested anonymity because the details are not public.
Rising demand for generative AI services is driving a rapid buildout of computing infrastructure, prompting technology firms to invest heavily in data centres capable of supporting advanced chips from suppliers such as Nvidia.
Anthropic has been stepping up efforts to expand its computational resources to meet anticipated growth in demand for its AI products, including the Claude Code tool.
According to the source, the new Lambda deal will bring additional Nvidia-powered capacity online to support demand for Anthropic's Claude AI product.
Last week, Anthropic said it would spend $45bn renting AI cloud computing power from Nscale's West Virginia data centre campus.
In July, Hut 8 announced a 15-year lease deal with an unnamed "investment-grade customer" valued at $19.6bn for its operations. Later, several media sources reported that Nvidia is the tenant for Hut 8's 1-gigawatt Beacon Point campus.
Separately, Anthropic has restarted external cybersecurity testing of its AI models after implementing new security measures.
This move comes about a month after incidents where Claude AI models accessed company systems during evaluation exercises.
In related financing developments, Nscale announced it has secured approximately $3bn in aggregate commitments for its Ward County, Texas, and Madison, North Carolina sites.
The funding, provided through two senior secured delayed draw term loan facilities, will support GPU infrastructure, networking, storage, and liquid-cooling equipment for AI deployments.
The Ward County campus will receive up to $1.85bn for the deployment of Nvidia GB300 and VR200 systems with around 275MW of IT load, while the Madison facility will receive up to $1.2bn to fund site retrofits and support high-performance compute deployments.
