For most people, investment income doesn't have to replace a paycheck to be useful. A few hundred dollars a month could take care of utilities, while $1,000 or more could cover a mortgage, groceries or several other major expenses.

That was the idea behind a recent discussion on Reddit's r/dividends community, where one person asked whether investors were using dividends as a meaningful second income alongside their jobs. The responses ranged from people collecting less than $100 a month to others saying their portfolios now generate thousands.

From Paying the Electric Bill to Replacing a Part-Time Job

One 58-year-old said they receive about $500 a month from less than $100,000 invested in dividend stocks and hope to reach at least $1,000 a month. They plan to retire next year with about $6,000 a month in pretax retirement income, eventually supplemented by Social Security.

Another commenter said $1,000 a month was also their target, while others were already using dividends to supplement retirement income. One retiree said they were using dividends from a Roth IRA alongside Social Security, showing how investment income can fill the gap without replacing a full paycheck.

Others are already bringing in considerably more. One commenter said they earn $2,000 a month in dividend income while also working part-time as a self-employed worker. Another said they moved money from a high-yield savings account into dividend-paying investments and watched their monthly income climb from between $200 and $300 to $1,800. They said that, at their current pace, the dividends could cover all their bills within nine months.

Further up the income ladder, a 36-year-old said they receive about $1,700 a month from dividends and interest, although they are still reinvesting it. Another investor of the same age said they were approaching $2,000 a month and hoped to eventually reach $4,000, at which point they could work part-time.

One commenter said their investments produce about $54,000 annually and described it as a "$25/hr., 40 hour week wage that I do nothing for."

"It's like someone is working for you for a modest salary," a person responded. "Pretty neat!"

Income That Can Make a Job Feel Less Essential

For some investors, the attraction goes past paying bills. It is about reducing how dependent they are on their next paycheck.

One person with a $1 million portfolio said roughly $600,000 of it generates about $62,000 annually in distributions. "I don't even worry about getting laid off anymore," they wrote.

That resonated with the original poster, who said they were in their mid-20s, had worked in tech and had already been laid off. Their goal was to save aggressively and eventually reach the same level of independence.

Not everyone is spending the money. Plenty of commenters said they reinvest every dollar, particularly while they are younger, allowing dividends to buy additional investments that can potentially generate still more income.

Still, the discussion shows why some investors think about passive income in smaller milestones. The first goal doesn't have to be replacing a $100,000 salary. It could simply be making enough each month to cover the electric bill.

Building a resilient portfolio means thinking beyond a single asset or market trend. Economic cycles shift, sectors rise and fall, and no one investment performs well in every environment. By spreading exposure across multiple asset classes, it becomes easier to manage risk, capture steady returns, and create long-term wealth that isn't tied to the fortunes of just one company or industry.
