Accrual to acquire Puzzle’s accounting firm business and software

Accrual has agreed to acquire Puzzle's accounting firm business and technology assets in a deal that includes its AI-native general ledger and month-end close software.

Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

Founded by Sasha Orloff, Puzzle developed a workspace featuring its ledger, AI Close, Cowork and Chat tools, building a customer base exceeding 7,000 start-ups, small enterprises and accounting practices.

Accrual has also used Puzzle's platform to manage its own internal finances.

The transaction will see Orloff join Accrual, along with members of the Puzzle team.

As per the deal, Puzzle will retain independent operations for the start-ups and small businesses that use its general ledger and accounting software directly.

The deal enables Accrual to expand beyond tax preparation into client accounting services (CAS).

The move aligns with the company's objective to offer a unified platform spanning tax, audit, advisory and client accounting work.

Accrual co-founder and CEO Cosmin Nicolaescu said: "From the beginning, our ambition has been to give accounting firms one intelligence layer across tax, audit, client accounting and advisory, rather than another disconnected tool.

"Puzzle has built exceptional ledger and close technology, and Sasha and his team have a rare understanding of both accounting work and the software required to improve it.

Accrual's CAS product is currently in early access with accountancy practices.

Accrual, which launched in February 2026, intends to begin embedding Puzzle's ledger and close capabilities following the transaction, with wider deployment planned by the end of 2026.

The transaction is scheduled to complete in the coming weeks, subject to customary closing conditions.
