South Korea To Launch Tokenized Securities Market In Early 2027

South Korea is planning to launch a tokenized securities market encompassing stocks, bonds, and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in February 2027.

The country's financial regulator outlined the plan to tokenize nearly all traditional securities within the next six months as it looks to bring stocks and bonds onchain.

The regulator said that it has "an ultimate goal of completely transforming and upgrading capital market infrastructures for digital connectivity."

More From Cryptoprowl:

South Korea is one of the world's most active retail investment markets, with 11.3 million verified crypto users and a stock market that regularly sees massive daily trading volumes.

Bringing tokenization to conventional equities and bonds, not just fractional investment products, puts the country on a path to a full digital capital market.

Asia is playing a major role in global crypto markets and the move to tokenize stocks, bonds, and tradeable funds.

South Korea's crypto market has the highest growth rate in the world and a 30% share of global stablecoin trading activity, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Tokenization is the process of placing digital representations of stocks and bonds on a blockchain.

Advocates say that tokenized securities provide greater liquidity, can be traded around the clock, and settle faster than traditional assets such as stocks and bonds.

Japan announced plans last week for a national blockchain settlement system for stocks and government bonds, which it aims to rollout by the early 2030s.

Singapore finalized its stablecoin licensing framework earlier this week.

Now, South Korea is planning to tokenize its market by February 2027. The country plans to open tokenization to all publicly offered securities.

Eventually, South Korea will also establish onchain payment infrastructure linked to stablecoins, which are cryptocurrencies tied to another asset, typically the U.S. dollar.

South Korea's financial regulator said that licensed financial firms will be able to handle tokenized securities within their current licenses.

Bitcoin is trading at $79,500 U.S. on Sept. 4.
