Charlotte, North Carolina-based Duke Energy Corporation (DUK) operates as an energy company in the United States. Valued at a market cap of $93.9 billion, the company operates through two segments: Electric Utilities and Infrastructure (EU&I) and Gas Utilities and Infrastructure (GU&I), and generates, transmits, distributes, and sells electricity to customers in the Southeast and Midwest regions.

Companies with a market cap of $10 billion or more are typically referred to as "large-cap stocks." DUK fits perfectly into that category, with its market cap exceeding this threshold and reflecting its substantial size and influence in the regulated electric utilities industry.

DUK stock reached its 52-week high of $134.49 on March 17 and has slipped 10.4% from that peak. The stock has fallen marginally over the past three months, outperforming the Nasdaq Composite ($NASX), which fell 3.2% over the same period.

Over the longer term, the scenario changes. DUK is down 1.1% over the past 52 weeks, lagging behind NASX's 23.2% return over the same period.

DUK has been trading below its 200-day moving average since August and also below its 50-day moving average since July.

On Aug. 4, DUK stock declined marginally following the release of its mixed Q2 2026 earnings. The company's revenue for the quarter amounted to $7.7 billion and failed to surpass the Street's forecasts. Moreover, its adjusted EPS came in at $1.43 and topped Wall Street's estimates. DUK expects full-year adjusted EPS in the range of $6.55 to $6.80.

When stacked against its peer in the regulated electric utilities industry, American Electric Power Company, Inc. (AEP) shares have grown 12.2% over the past 52 weeks, outpacing DUK's performance over the same time period.

Wall Street's view of DUK stock is somewhat optimistic. Among the 24 analysts covering the stock, the overall consensus rating is "Moderate Buy." Its mean price target of $137.10 offers a 13.7% upside potential.
