Jaguar Land Rover announced Monday that it plans to shed 4,000 positions — approximately one in ten of its employees worldwide — with a goal of achieving £1.7 billion ($2.3 billion) in savings across the next two years. Tata Motors' British subsidiary pointed to price pressure from Chinese EV makers, the weight of U.S. tariffs, and disruption caused by a cyberattack as forces straining its bottom line.

Chief executive PB Balaji said the cuts are part of a broader transformation of the automaker. "The automotive industry faces significant challenges, with technological change amidst intense competition and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty," Balaji said in a statement. "As part of this transformation, we will reduce our global workforce by around 4,000 roles over the next two years. We recognise this will be difficult news for colleagues affected, and are committed to supporting everyone with care, fairness and respect."

JLR's U.K. workforce stands at around 34,000, and since the company's production is concentrated in British factories, those sites are expected to bear the brunt of the reductions, according to the Associated Press. The company makes the Range Rover, Discovery, and other luxury SUVs.

The savings target will help fund £15 to £18 billion ($20–24 billion) in planned investment over the next five years in electrification and digital technologies, Balaji said. The company also plans to launch five new products over the next 12 months and is targeting a break-even level of 300,000 vehicles, the company said.

Tata Motors stock traded 0.3% higher on Monday and is up more than 10% year-to-date.

JLR's announcement presents an early challenge for U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham. After ruling out a bailout over the weekend, the government indicated that U.K. Business and Trade Minister Jonathan Reynolds would sit down with JLR leadership to discuss the planned reductions before the week is out, according to CNBC. "We understand that this will be an uncertain and concerning time for affected workers, their families and wider communities," a government spokesperson told CNBC.

U.S. tariffs have been a significant drag on JLR's finances. Tariff-related costs ran to £410 million for JLR last year alone, a burden that pushed the company to raise prices and delivery fees — even as it weighed partnership talks with Stellantis. JLR currently has no manufacturing presence in the U.S., its largest sales market.
