Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Moderna, Inc. (MRNA) is a biotechnology company that provides messenger RNA medicines in the United States and internationally. The company has a market cap of $58.1 billion and offers respiratory vaccines including Spikevax, mNEXSPIKE, mRESVIA, COVID, RSV, seasonal influenza, combination, and pandemic influenza vaccines, latent vaccines, and human immunodeficiency virus vaccines, among others.

Companies with a market cap of $10 billion or more are typically called "large-cap stocks." MRNA fits squarely into that category, with a market cap above this threshold that reflects its substantial size and influence in the biotechnology industry.

However, the stock currently trades 17.6% below its 52-week high of $176.66 recorded on Aug. 19. MRNA has surged 182.1% over the past three months, outperforming the State Street Healthcare Select Sector SPDR ETF's (XLV) 12.7% rise during the same time frame.

In the longer term, MRNA has delivered a similar performance. The stock has grown 499.5% over the past 52 weeks, outperforming the 24.8% surge of XLV over the same period. MRNA has been trading above its 200-day moving average since last year and also above its 50-day moving average since August, indicating bullish momentum.

On August 19, MRNA stock rocketed by an impressive 177% following its personalized mRNA cancer vaccine, developed with Merck & Co., Inc. (MRK), met key goals in a late-stage trial. The company's new treatment, Intismeran, reduced the risk of melanoma recurrence and prevented tumors from spreading when combined with Merck's Keytruda, according to MRNA officials. Moreover, the company pointed out its first successful late-stage trial for an mRNA cancer vaccine, advancing its oncology pipeline further and marking a tremendous achievement in the history of the pharmaceutical industry.

When stacked against its rival, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (REGN) has surged 45.9% over the past year, lagging behind MRNA.

Wall Street has a skeptical view of the stock currently. Among the 23 analysts tracking MRNA, the overall consensus stands at a "Hold." Its mean price target of $109.05 is below the current price level. However, its Street-high price of $180 suggests a 23.7% upside potential from current price levels.
