Integrated energy transition company EnergyPathways has selected Jacobs to provide consenting, regulatory and Development Consent Order (DCO) services for the Marram Energy Storage Hub (MESH) project in the UK.

The project is situated in the Irish Sea and connects onshore at Barrow-in-Furness. It is designed to contribute to the UK's energy security and aims to deliver more flexibility in the national energy system.

Jacobs' responsibilities include managing the project's planning and DCO strategy and overseeing environmental planning. The company will also lead technical coordination and engage with stakeholders to secure consent under the UK's Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project planning regime.

EnergyPathways has set a target for the MESH project to become operational by 2031, contingent on obtaining the required consents and financing.

The MESH Energy Storage project is expected to be one of the UK's largest integrated energy storage schemes, with a planned capacity of 300MW/55GW-hours.

The facility is set to combine compressed air energy storage (CAES) with both natural gas and hydrogen storage, offering ultra-long-duration storage exceeding 190 hours.

It aims to support renewable energy integration and boost resilience by providing a means to balance supply and demand.

In addition to leading the DCO process, Jacobs will advise on EnergyPathways' submission to Ofgem's forthcoming Long Duration Electricity Storage Cap & Floor scheme, as well as providing environmental and technical guidance.

The company will also coordinate stakeholder engagement with local councils and regional authorities, support the grid connection application, and align statutory consents and technical assessments with the project's schedule.

Jacobs' role includes monitoring changes in legislation and planning policy to identify consenting risks and streamline regulatory procedures.

Jacobs executive vice-president Richard Sanderson said: "MESH represents an important infrastructure development for Barrow-in-Furness and the wider UK energy system.

"Our extensive experience delivering complex infrastructure projects through the Development Consent Order process will support EnergyPathways in navigating planning and regulatory requirements while maintaining project momentum."

"EnergyPathways appoints Jacobs for UK's MESH project" was originally created and published by Power Technology, a GlobalData owned brand.
