Wall Street raises S&P 500 targets past 8,000 amid pullback risks

Wall Street strategists are raising their S&P 500 price targets above 8,000 while cautioning that risks of a market pullback are growing, according to MarketWatch.
RBC Capital Markets announced Tuesday that its 12-month S&P 500 price target remains at 8,150, according to MarketWatch. Barclays has also revised its outlook, joining the wave of firms recalibrating their projections, MarketWatch reported.
The updated targets arrive against a backdrop of caution signals analysts have flagged in recent weeks. The CBOE Volatility Index has dropped under 15 — a level CNBC's Mike Santoli characterized as "eerie complacency" — at a time when seasonal patterns typically push volatility higher, according to prior Quartz coverage. The 10-year Treasury yield climbed back above 4.7% after Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh signaled at Jackson Hole that the committee views short-term rate increases as the appropriate response to persistent inflation, and that one could come soon.
Sentiment data also leans cautious. John Kolovos of Macro Risk Advisors characterized the latest sentiment reading as tilted in a worrying direction, with traditional surveys like Investors Intelligence registering too many bulls and real-time market data pointing to elevated complacency. Pricing in fed-funds futures put the probability of a September rate hike at roughly 50% following Warsh's address.
Earnings concentration adds another layer of risk. Charles Schwab's analysis found that just two companies — Nvidia and Micron — are driving roughly a third of the market's total 2026 profit growth, while the ten largest earnings contributors collectively explain about two-thirds of it.
The bullish target-setting has been a theme across Wall Street this year. Ed Yardeni, one of the market's more prominent strategists, raised his year-end S&P 500 target to 8,400 — his third upward revision of 2026 — after starting the year at 7,700, according to MarketWatch. Despite the repeated increases, Yardeni said he still does not consider himself bullish enough, and noted that a number of sell-side analysts hold more optimistic views, according to MarketWatch.
The S&P 500 has stayed within 2% of its record high above 7,800 throughout August and has gained 12.72% year to date.
