Victrex Finds Its High-Performance Groove Again - Moby

British specialty chemicals firm Victrex finally gave investors an upgrade worth getting excited about, with demand improving in the markets that matter most, cost cuts starting to bite and full-year profit now looking better than previously expected.

WHAT HAPPENED

Victrex shares surged around 15%, making the high-performance polymer specialist one of the FTSE 250's biggest winners after it lifted full-year profit guidance.

The company now expects underlying profit before tax of £45 million to £47 million (about $61 to $64 million) for the year ending September 30, up from its previous £42 million to £44 million range, following stronger fourth-quarter trading across several key markets.

Aerospace, electronics and value-added resellers have led the improvement, while every geographic region has grown year on year and Asia Pacific has been particularly strong.

The shares climbed toward £10 and briefly touched a new 52-week high above £10.18, extending a recovery that had already started to become visible in the third quarter.

Revenue in that period jumped 18% year on year to £84.5 million, with sales volumes up 17%. For the first nine months, revenue was 7% higher and volumes had increased 10%.

Average selling prices remained broadly stable at £68 per kilogram, which suggests the recovery has been driven more by genuine product demand than by simply charging customers more.

Cost cutting is helping too, with Victrex completing a previously announced 10% reduction in its workforce. Initial savings are already coming through, while the wider profit improvement program is expected to deliver at least £10 million of annualized savings in the 2027 financial year.

The group has also cleaned up its portfolio, selling US-based Kleiss Gears in August after deciding the business was no longer central to its strategy. Victrex will record an exceptional loss of around £3 million on the disposal.

WHY IT MATTERS

Victrex sells plastic that behaves rather unlike plastic, with its PEEK and PAEK polymers designed for environments where ordinary materials would melt, corrode, wear out or generally struggle to perform.

That makes them useful in aircraft, semiconductor manufacturing, medical devices, energy equipment and automotive components. The products can replace metal while reducing weight and can tolerate extreme temperatures, chemicals and mechanical stress.

The downside is that Victrex is exposed to some very cyclical customers, so when electronics production slows, aircraft programs pause or industrial customers run down inventories, demand can disappear quickly.

That helped explain why underlying pretax profit dropped to £46.4 million in the previous financial year from £59.1 million, but several of those markets are now improving at the same time.

Aerospace is particularly attractive because manufacturers want lighter components as they try to improve fuel efficiency and reduce production costs, and Victrex materials can replace heavier metal or traditional composite components in certain applications.

Electronics brings another structural opportunity. PEEK is used in semiconductor production equipment because it can survive heat and aggressive chemicals while producing very few contaminants, giving Victrex another route into higher-value applications as semiconductor investment rises.

Asia Pacific strength matters for the same reason, since the region sits at the heart of electronics and semiconductor manufacturing and Victrex has also invested directly in additional Chinese production capacity.

Put those ingredients together and the profit upgrade starts looking more interesting than a simple cost-cutting story, although management is still doing some fairly aggressive pruning.

Cutting 10% of the workforce boosts margins, but investors will want to see whether Victrex can generate sustainable growth after the savings have been pocketed, because there is only so much profit a company can manufacture by removing costs.

The best version of the story is therefore straightforward: recovering demand lifts volumes while a leaner cost base allows more of each extra pound of revenue to reach the bottom line, creating the kind of operating leverage investors tend to reward.

WHAT'S NEXT

The first milestone is the full-year result, where Victrex now needs to deliver within its upgraded £45 million to £47 million profit range and show that fourth-quarter momentum has not simply been borrowed from next year.

The bigger event comes later this month, when management is expected to lay out more detail on its growth strategy and longer-term value proposition, with investors looking for evidence that aerospace and electronics can become durable growth engines rather than another temporary rebound.

Victrex is starting to show that stronger end-market demand and a leaner cost base can work together in a much more profitable way.
