Dallas, Texas-based Copart, Inc. (CPRT) is a global online vehicle auction and remarketing company. With a market cap of nearly $28.5 billion, it specializes in selling used, wholesale, and salvage-title vehicles, primarily on behalf of insurance companies, through its proprietary online auction platform.

Copart sits in the "large-cap" territory, a class reserved for companies valued above $10 billion. Its competitive edge lies in its dominant global online salvage vehicle auction platform, supported by a vast yard network and strong relationships with insurance companies. Its powerful network effects attract both sellers and buyers, creating a highly scalable and profitable business model.

Copart's stock has staged a notable rebound, but the longer-term picture remains challenging. CPRT shares are still 31.4% below their 52-week high of $49.16, yet they have gained 9.6% over the past three months, comfortably ahead of the S&P 500 Index ($SPX), which has rallied 1.8%.

The longer-term performance paints a different picture. CPRT has fallen 32.5% over the past year and declined 13.9% year to date, while the S&P 500 has gained 18.7% and 12.8%, respectively.

The stock's move above its 50-day moving average in mid-August signals improving near-term momentum, but its continued position below the 200-day average over the past year underscores the longer-term pressure.

Copart's stock has endured a rough year, pressured by slowing salvage-vehicle volumes, softer insurance-auction activity, and growing doubts about whether its premium valuation can be sustained. While the company's resilient margins and strong balance sheet have provided some support, investors have remained cautious about the weak earnings momentum.

Still, signs of a turnaround are emerging. On Sept. 3, Copart shares rose 3.3% after JPMorgan Chase (JPM) upgraded the stock to "Overweight" from "Neutral" and raised its price target to $40 from $32, citing potential market-share gains and renewed confidence in returning CEO Jay Adair's growth strategy.

Earlier, Copart shares jumped 6.1% on Aug. 19, after Bloomberg reported that the company was among the potential buyers of CCC Intelligent Solutions, an insurance-claims software provider.

Looking at Copart alongside its rival, AutoNation, Inc. (AN), the performance gap is hard to miss. AutoNation's shares have slipped 5.9% over the past 52 weeks and are up 2.9% year to date, outpacing CPRT.

Nevertheless, among 13 analysts covering CPRT stock, the consensus rating stands at a "Moderate Buy." Also, the average price target of $41.40 implies roughly 22.8% upside from current levels.
