GinsGlobal: ITEK up 13% YTD as AI, cybersecurity and defence tech drive rotation

GinsGlobal Index Fund CEO Anthony Ginsberg tells Proactive's Stephen Gunnion that the GinsGlobal Tech Megatrend UCITS ETF (ITEK) fund is up approximately 13% year-to-date and gained more than 5% in August alone, with AI and robotics remaining the top sub-theme at nearly 50% year-to-date gains. Ginsberg said the fund's average price-to-earnings ratio is in the low 20s, which he describes as only a small premium to the S&P 500, arguing that tech is not overvalued at current levels.

Beyond AI and robotics, Ginsberg highlighted cybersecurity, defence tech, blockchain and gene editing as strong performers in August, pointing to a broadening rotation across the tech ecosystem. He cited a global AI infrastructure buildout of close to one trillion dollars in the current year, driven partly by cloud spending and M&A activity, with NVIDIA among the companies making recent acquisitions.

Ginsberg emphasised the fund's equal-weighting approach as a key differentiator, noting that its top 10 holdings represent just over 12% of the portfolio, compared with north of 50% or even 60% for some rival tech funds. The fund holds roughly 60% in US equities and approximately 22% in Asia, including Japan, China and South Korea, with Ginsberg arguing that per-capita cloud spending in Asia already surpasses the US and Europe in some cases.

On the outlook, Ginsberg said tailwinds include a resilient US economy, lower corporate taxes supporting capital expenditure, a weaker US dollar boosting earnings for American tech firms, and the prospect of stable or lower interest rates supporting further M&A. He also flagged anticipated IPOs from Anthropic and OpenAI as likely catalysts for additional corporate spending across the sector.
