AeroVironment (AVAV) shares are inching lower ahead of the drone company's fiscal Q1 earnings scheduled to be released after the market closes on Sept. 9. Consensus is for AVAV to record $0.22 in earnings per share (EPS) for its first quarter, which would represent a 31.25% decline on a year-over-year basis.
Heading into the quarterly print, AeroVironment stock is down more than 60% versus its year-to-date high.

Where Options Data Suggests AVAV Shares Are Headed
Given the recent underperformance, the derivatives market believes AVAV shares will push higher after the earnings event, despite the expected decline in EPS.
The put-to-call ratio on AeroVironment options contracts expiring Sept. 11 sits at 0.74x at the time of writing, signaling a bullish skew.
And the upper price on those contracts, according to Barchart, is set at $157 currently, indicating potential for a more than 10% rally through the end of this week.
From a technical perspective, AVAV is currently trading decisively below its key moving averages (MAs), suggesting bears are firmly in control heading into the release.
However, the RSI in the late 30s implies the stock is already approaching oversold territory.
Does AeroVironment Stock Justify Its Premium Multiple?
Investors are also advised to exercise caution in playing AeroVironment shares at current levels because of valuation concerns.
As of this writing, the forward price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple on the defense-tech firm sits at roughly 45x, which makes it even more expensive to own than the best-of-breed AI stocks like Nvidia (NVDA).
On the flip side, insider ownership at 0.79% and institutional ownership at an exciting 86% (including prominent names like BlackRock, Vanguard, and State Street) improve AVAV's appeal as a long-term holding.
All in all, AeroVironment stands to rip higher if it posts a strong quarter and issues upbeat guidance for the future late on Sept. 9.
Wall Street Remains Bullish on AeroVironment
Wall Street analysts also believe AVAV stock's pullback has gone a bit too far in recent weeks.
The consensus rating on AeroVironment sits at "Strong Buy" currently, with the mean price target of about $238 signaling potential for a 60% rally through the end of this year.
