TotalEnergies has announced the Acacia-5 oil discovery in Block 17 offshore Angola and plans to bring the new field into production just three months after its discovery in June 2026.

The development is expected to increase Block 17 output by 6,000 barrels per day (bpd), using spare capacity on the Pazflor floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) facility.

TotalEnergies operates Block 17 with a 38% stake, working with Equinor, which holds 22.16%, ExxonMobil with 19%, Azule Energy with 15.84% and Sonangol E&P with 5%.

Acacia-5 is the company's second exploration success in Angola in 2026 following a recent discovery in Block 0 in Angola's Lower Congo Basin.

Chevron serves as the operator of Block 0 with a 39.2% stake, with TotalEnergies holding a 10% stake and additional partners Sonangol E&P and Azule Energy holding 41% and 9.8%, respectively.

TotalEnergies chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanné said: "I am very pleased to announce these exploration successes in Angola, which demonstrate both the attractiveness of the country and our confidence in its future.

"Exploration is a key pillar of our ambition in Angola, supported by the incentives introduced to encourage investment.

"Together with our partners, we aim to explore further and unlock new resources, sustaining a strong exploration effort to identify new opportunities across Angola's offshore basins."

In addition to the new discovery, TotalEnergies has entered into agreements with Angola's national concessionaire, Agência Nacional de Petróleo, Gás e Biocombustíveis (ANPG), for a 40% operated interest in exploration Blocks 17/25 and 32/21.

These blocks are situated in the Lower Congo Basin close to current production hubs operated by TotalEnergies in Blocks 17 and 32, where a total of six FPSOs are operating.

TotalEnergies has a 40% operated share in exploration Blocks 17/25 and 32/21, partnering equally with ExxonMobil at 40% and Sonangol E&P at 20%.

The company reported that both new blocks have extensive 3D seismic data and access to multiple geological prospects.

In February 2026, TotalEnergies signed a heads of agreement with ANPG and ExxonMobil to farm into four additional exploration blocks – 40, 41, 42 and 58 – in the Benguela Basin, taking a 35% interest.

TotalEnergies has operated in Angola since 1953 and currently employs around 1,500 people in the country.

The company's hydrocarbon production in Angola reached 156,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2025.

"TotalEnergies makes new oil discovery in Angola's Block 17" was originally created and published by Offshore Technology, a GlobalData owned brand.
