Oracle Just Showed a Less Painful Way to Finance AI Clouds. That’s Awkward for CoreWeave

Oracle Corporation (NYSE:ORCL) and CoreWeave, Inc. (NASDAQ:CRWV) are both spending enormous sums to turn scarce GPUs and data-center capacity into AI cloud revenue. Their financing models increasingly look very different.

Oracle reported September 10 that remaining performance obligations reached $664 billion after more than $30 billion of new AI cloud contracts. Crucially, $11.36 billion of its $28.5 billion quarterly capital expenditure was offset by customer prepayments, and most of those new contracts will not require substantial incremental Oracle-funded capital investment.

CoreWeave represents the more leveraged neocloud model. Reuters Breakingviews compared today's AI infrastructure boom with the broadband buildout of the late 1990s, noting that neoclouds rely heavily on debt, concentrated customers and Nvidia hardware while competing against better-capitalized hyperscalers.

Oracle Can Shift Part of the Financing Burden

Oracle Corporation (NYSE:ORCL) has a bull case built around scale allowing it to structure AI contracts more defensively. Customer prepayments and bring-your-own-hardware arrangements can shift part of the financing burden away from Oracle while still expanding OCI revenue.

The bearish case remains the sheer amount of infrastructure Oracle is building. Even an improved financing model does not eliminate depreciation, execution risk or the possibility that long-term AI demand disappoints.

CoreWeave Carries More Balance-Sheet Risk

CoreWeave, Inc. (NASDAQ:CRWV) has a bull case built around specialization. It was built specifically around accelerated computing rather than adapting a general-purpose cloud, and customers that need large clusters quickly may value that focus.

Its bear case is financial fragility. AI infrastructure can depreciate technologically long before debt matures. If rental rates fall, customer concentration increases or a new accelerator architecture changes infrastructure economics, leverage can turn an operating problem into an equity problem.

Hedge funds became more bullish on both stocks during Q2. Oracle ownership rose to 119 funds from 115, while CoreWeave increased to 71 from 63. Short sellers, however, draw an enormous distinction between them. Oracle's short interest was about 2.8% of float as of August 14, while CoreWeave's was roughly 18.9%.

That is one of the starkest sentiment gaps in the AI infrastructure trade.

Oracle's valuation increasingly reflects an AI cloud transformation, but CoreWeave's equity is more sensitive to financing assumptions, residual GPU values and customer concentration. CoreWeave could still produce enormous revenue growth, but Oracle's ability to make customers shoulder more of the infrastructure bill is exactly the kind of financial advantage that matters when AI capital spending enters the trillions.

While we acknowledge the potential of ORCL and CRWV as investments, we believe certain other AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk.
