TSM’s Record Month Confirms AMD’s AI Ramp, but Its Pricing Power Could Take Some of the Upside Back

TSM’s Record Month Confirms AMD’s AI Ramp, but Its Pricing Power Could Take Some of the Upside Back

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (NYSE:TSM) reported a record August just as Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) is pushing deeper into the AI accelerator market.

TSM's August revenue reached NT$514.81 billion, up 53.3% from a year earlier and 10.1% sequentially. Revenue for January through August increased 39.3%.

The growth is a powerful signal for advanced semiconductor demand. AMD depends heavily on leading-edge manufacturing as it scales data-center CPUs and AI accelerators. That makes TSM capacity essential to AMD's attempt to take accelerator share from Nvidia.

TSM's Pricing Power Lands on AMD's Cost Base

The relationship, however, cuts both ways. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (NYSE:TSM) has enormous leverage over customers. Barron's noted concerns over reports that TSMC could raise chip prices by as much as 10% next year, with AMD among the companies exposed to higher foundry costs.

TSM's Record Month Confirms AMD's AI Ramp, but Its Pricing Power Could Take Some of the Upside Back

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) has a bull case built around hyperscalers wanting a credible second source for AI compute. Every incremental deployment of AMD accelerators can improve software adoption, developer familiarity and customer confidence. Rapid industry growth also means AMD does not have to displace Nvidia dollar for dollar to build a very large business.

The bear case is that AMD is competing against an Nvidia ecosystem encompassing chips, networking and CUDA software while simultaneously paying TSM for leading-edge manufacturing. Higher foundry prices could therefore arrive precisely when AMD needs aggressive pricing to gain share.

The Foundry Does Not Need to Pick the Winner

TSM's bull case is more agnostic. It can benefit whether Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom or custom hyperscaler silicon gains share because much of the industry's advanced manufacturing ultimately passes through its fabs. Its bear case is capital intensity, geographic risk and customer efforts to diversify manufacturing.

Hedge funds became constructive on both stocks in Q2. Insider Monkey tracked 249 hedge funds holding TSM, up from 234, while AMD ownership surged to 164 funds from 134. Short interest stood near 0.6% for TSM and roughly 2.5% for AMD as of August 14.

AMD offers greater upside if it materially increases accelerator share, but TSM offers the cleaner probability-weighted exposure because it does not need to predict which accelerator designer wins. Record foundry revenue says the AI chip market is expanding. The more interesting question is how much profit AMD gets to retain after paying the manufacturer that enables the expansion.

While we acknowledge the potential of TSM and AMD as investments, we believe certain other AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk.
