Chipmakers Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA, XETRA:NVD), Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MU) and Broadcom Inc (NASDAQ:AVGO, XETRA:1YD) fell on Monday as calls to slow artificial intelligence (AI) development raised concerns about future hardware spending.
Dario Amodei, chief executive of AI developer Anthropic, and rival executives have called for a slower pace of development.
Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA, XETRA:NVD) traded 3% lower at $210.86 in morning trading.
Jeffrey Favuzza, an equities trading analyst at investment bank Jefferies, found no clear sign that the safety debate would moderate spending.
He highlighted Amodei's clarification that the call did not mean halting model training, the process of teaching AI systems to identify patterns.
Federico Manicardi and Victoria Campos, of investment bank JPMorgan's international trading desk, argued that AI adoption remained intact and excessive slowing risked ceding leadership.
Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MU) fell 6% to $914.30, recording the largest percentage decline among the three chipmakers.
Madison Rezaei, an analyst at investment research firm Bernstein, said she expects weaker demand for rural data centres built for training if that activity slows.
She questioned how quickly demand could shift to inference, the process through which trained AI models make predictions, given uncertainty over profitable uses.
Broadcom Inc (NASDAQ:AVGO, XETRA:1YD) declined 5% to $344.50 as AI concerns added to caution over its revenue outlook.
Its fourth-quarter revenue forecast of $34.8 billion fell slightly below expectations of $35.03 billion, adding to shareholder caution.
Long-term earnings projections exceeded forecasts, but the short-term guidance shortfall weighed on sentiment after its September 2 results.
