Bond Yields Near 5% as ETF Investors Keep Buying

Investors added almost $16 billion to US-listed ETFs during the week ending Sept. 11, pushing year-to-date inflows past $1.4 trillion.
The S&P 500 sold off about 1% last week, though it remains only about 2.3% below its August record, while the Nasdaq slipped as well and sits roughly 5% off its high.
Bonds were under pressure too, with the 10-year Treasury yield challenging the 5% mark for the first time since 2023 (some investors seemed to have treated those higher yields as a buying opportunity).
By category, international equity ETFs led with $6.9 billion in inflows, followed by US fixed income ETFs at $4.9 billion. US equity ETFs managed to pull in just $293 million, a second-straight ho-hum week.
Taking a look at individual ETFs, the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) took in a hefty $23.4 billion, but that was more than offset by $31.1 billion in outflows from the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV).
Both figures reflect short-term, mechanical movements that tend to reverse, including heartbeat trades used for tax efficiency and dividend-avoidance strategies, rather than any real shift in demand.
Among the more meaningful winners, the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) drew $1.2 billion as long-term yields kept climbing. The 30-year Treasury yield is currently near a 19-year high of 5.35%.
The AI-driven semiconductor funds also gathered assets, with the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) taking in $993 million and the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) $720 million.
