Taiwan Semiconductor Vs. ASML: There’s Actually One True Dominant Picks-and-Shovels Play

Quick Read

  • TSMC (TSM) posted $40B in revenue up 36%, while ASML's EUV monopoly ensures every leading-edge chipmaker, including TSMC, Intel, and Samsung, must buy from it.

  • ASML is nearly fully booked on EUV orders for 2027 and plans a 30% capacity expansion for 2028, preempting demand rather than chasing it.

ASML (NASDAQ:ASML) and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE:TSM) both posted Q2 2026 results in mid-July, and the pairing matters because one sells the machines and the other runs them. ASML raised its full-year outlook on AI-driven lithography demand. TSMC lifted its capex plan and pushed 2nm into commercial production. Same customers. Different chokepoints.

ASML delivered $10.65 billion in revenue, up 21.3% year over year, with operating margin expanding to 37.1%. The upside came from Installed Base Management, which ran nearly €300 million above guidance as customers scrambled for upgrades to squeeze more output from existing fabs. Memory-related system sales are now expected to grow over 75% this year, a HBM and DDR story CEO Christophe Fouquet called "the perfect storm for ASML on DRAM."

TSMC's quarter was heavier and hotter. Revenue hit $40.20 billion, up 36.0%, with gross margin at 67.7%. HPC drove 66% of revenue, and advanced nodes at 7nm and below made up 77% of wafer revenue. Management raised the 2026 capital budget to $60 billion to $64 billion and announced another $100 billion Arizona investment. That is capital ASML will help spend.

One Sells the Shovels. One Digs the Mine.

The real divergence is optionality. TSMC's dominance depends on staying two nodes ahead of Samsung and Intel Foundry, and 2nm is expected to dilute Q3 gross margin by 3 to 4 percentage points. Overseas fabs will trim another 2-3% in the early stages. ASML sits above that fight. Whether TSMC wins, or Intel's 18A gains share (already using high-NA EUV technology), or Samsung recovers, every contender must buy from Veldhoven. TSMC cannot manufacture a single leading-edge wafer without ASML's EUV and DUV machines.

ASML is close to being fully covered with low-NA EUV orders for 2027 and studying a further 30% capacity expansion for 2028. Fouquet's line stuck with me: "We're not waiting. We're preempting."

What Decides the Next Leg

I will watch whether TSMC's 2nm ramp holds its 65-67% Q3 gross margin guide, and whether ASML's Q3 comes in at the top of the €11-12 billion range. Investors can also track EUV order intake for 2028 and any hint that hyperscaler capex is slowing. All that capex has to be powered, cooled, and networked by somebody other than the chipmakers, and we rounded up seven of those suppliers in a free AI infrastructure report.

Why I Lean ASML for the Purest Picks-and-Shovels Bet

TSMC trades at a forward P/E of 20 against ASML's 28, reflecting TSMC's stronger near-term earnings leverage to AI demand. ASML's structural position is different: its EUV monopoly means it captures spend whether Intel Foundry claws back share or Samsung recovers. TSMC's model requires flawless execution at each node; ASML's requires steady shipment cadence. A meaningful slowdown in AI capex would pressure both. For now, the toolmaker-to-the-toolmakers profile offers a distinct exposure to the same secular trend.
