Alphabet’s Core Business Is Printing Cash Faster Than Regulators Can Write Fines

Quick Read

  • GOOGL's Q2 operating cash flow hit $39B, meaning one quarter alone could cover the EU's $3.5B competition fine more than ten times.

  • Unlike META, MSFT, or AMZN, Alphabet bundles Search, YouTube, Cloud, and AI into one platform trading at a P/E of just 15.

  • Google Cloud's $460B contract backlog has nearly doubled quarter over quarter, providing signed-revenue cover for the $175B to $185B in planned 2026 CapEx.

I bought Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) again last week. That makes it the sixth month running I have added to the position, and nothing on the horizon changes my mind.

My thesis fits on an index card. Alphabet's core business generates cash at a pace regulators cannot meaningfully dent with fines, and I keep getting handed that cash machine at a price that does not reflect what it earns.

Cash Machine Doing the Talking

Google Search & other pulled in $63.27B in Q2 FY2026, up 17% year over year. YouTube ads added $11.06B. Google Cloud grew 82% to $24.77B. Total revenue landed at $119.80B for the quarter, up 24.23% year over year. Full year 2025 revenue crossed $400B for the first time.

Operating cash flow in Q2 alone was $39.07B. The company has now beaten EPS estimates 11 consecutive quarters, with Q2 EPS of $9.11 against a $3.04 estimate. That is the 12th straight quarter of double-digit revenue growth.

The European Commission handed down a $3.5B competition fine in Q3 2025. One quarter of operating cash flow could cover that check ten times over. That is the math regulators keep running into.

Priced Like a Utility, Earning Like Nothing Else

A P/E of 15. Return on equity of 35.70%. Return on invested capital of 29.60%. Net profit margin of 32.81%. Interest coverage of 175.50x on a debt-to-equity of 0.143. I have owned utilities that carried worse balance sheets while earning a tenth of the returns.

Learn 13 Major Retirement Mistakes and Ways To Avoid Them

One investment mistake could create big risks for your retirement. Many investors make the same critical errors: being too conservative, making big bets on "sure things," or paying excessive fees. Any of those blunders can endanger your hard-earned savings.

Now you can learn the mistakes even experienced investors make (and ways you can sidestep them before it's too late) with this new guide: 13 Retirement Mistakes and How to Avoid Them from Fisher Investments. Access your complimentary copy here (sponsor)

Why This One, Not the Obvious Alternatives

I look at Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META), Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and none of them stack the way Alphabet does at this multiple. Meta runs a strong ad engine without a cloud franchise or a Search moat. Amazon runs a cloud franchise without the ad engine feeding it queries. Microsoft has AI distribution through enterprise seats, but I get paid to wait on GOOGL at a lower earnings multiple while Google Cloud grows at 82% off a larger base than most peers can claim.

Only Alphabet owns Search, YouTube, Android, Chrome, Google Cloud, and Waymo under one roof. Nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 use Gemini Enterprise. The Gemini App has 950 million monthly active users. Waymo passed 500,000 fully autonomous rides per week. That collection is not for sale anywhere else.

Risk I Actually Respect

Free cash flow went to negative $5.86B in Q2 FY2026. CapEx doubled to $44.92B. Long-term debt jumped from $46.5B to $98.2B. Buybacks were suspended. Full year 2026 CapEx guidance sits at $175B to $185B.

If AI infrastructure returns disappoint, that spending becomes a stone tied to the ankle. All of that CapEx has to be powered, cooled, and networked by somebody, and we profiled seven of those suppliers in a free report you can grab here. What keeps me calm is the Google Cloud backlog, which sat at over $460 billion at the end of Q1 after nearly doubling quarter on quarter. Customers already signed the contracts. I trust signed contracts more than I trust my own forecast.

Buy Button Stays Active

A 10-year total return of 767.58%. A dividend raised 5% to $0.22 per share in Q1. Paid subscriptions at 350 million. Regulators write fines in the billions. Alphabet's core business prints them in weeks. That is why I keep buying.
