GE Vernova and Vineyard Wind Settle $300M-Plus Offshore Wind Dispute

Vineyard Wind and GE Vernova have reached a settlement ending their legal battle over the major offshore wind development off Massachusetts, removing a source of uncertainty surrounding one of the largest U.S. offshore wind projects.

Under the agreement announced Wednesday, GE Vernova withdrew its notice seeking to terminate its involvement in Vineyard Wind, while both sides agreed to dismiss all outstanding legal claims. Financial and other terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

The agreement closes a dispute that escalated earlier this year after GE Vernova sought to exit contracts covering turbine construction and maintenance, arguing that it had not been paid more than $300 million for work on the project. Vineyard Wind challenged the move in Massachusetts state court and secured an injunction requiring GE Vernova to continue working at the wind farm.

The disagreement was also tied to costs and delays following the failure of a GE Vernova turbine blade in 2024, an incident that scattered debris along nearby beaches and triggered extensive inspection and repair work. Vineyard Wind argued that it was entitled to withhold payments to offset costs it attributed to turbine problems and project delays, while GE Vernova maintained that the unpaid amounts gave it the right to terminate the agreements.

Resolving the dispute is particularly significant because of GE Vernova's continuing role in commissioning and servicing the specialized turbines. Vineyard Wind had argued in court that replacing the manufacturer at this stage could have seriously disrupted the project.

The roughly $4.5-billion Vineyard Wind 1 development consists of 62 turbines with total capacity of about 806 MW. The companies said Wednesday that all of the turbines are now capable of producing electricity, with the project designed to supply power equivalent to the needs of more than 400,000 homes and businesses.

Vineyard Wind is owned equally by Avangrid Renewables and funds managed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, according to the project's website.

The settlement removes a major commercial overhang from a project that has become a closely watched test case for the U.S. offshore wind industry, which has faced rising construction costs, supply-chain problems and project delays in recent years.
