Burkina Faso opens $30m textile facility to cut clothing imports

At the official ceremony on 9 September, President Ibrahim Traoré unveiled the Textile des Forces du Burkina Faso (TEXFORCES-BF) industrial complex, situated on a 30-hectare site in Logofourousso.
Ecofin Agency reported that the facility brings together several core stages of textile manufacturing, including weaving, knitting, dyeing, finishing, and garment production.
TEXFORCES-BF is set to supply uniforms for both the Defence and Security Forces and the Volunteers for the Defence of the Homeland. It will also produce a range of clothing for the civilian market.
Initial government estimates indicate the factory will process over 12 tonnes of cotton fibre per day, with expected annual outputs of around 20 million metres of fabric, six million knitted garments, six million uniforms, six million T-shirts, and one million pairs of socks.
The launch of the facility forms part of Burkina Faso's broader strategy to expand its capacity for transforming domestic cotton into finished goods.
This move is intended to strengthen the local value chain and keep a larger share of the sector's economic benefits within the country.
This drive to bolster processing infrastructure is not limited to large-scale industry.
In November 2025, authorities opened the National Centre for Support to Artisanal Cotton Processing (CNATAC) in Bobo-Dioulasso, a CFA Fr1.5bn centre designed to enhance artisanal weaving, dyeing, and sewing. It aims to support small-scale producers and preserve traditional textile know-how.
In July 2025, Burkina Faso's Caisse des Dépôts et d'Investissements (CDI-BF) signed a memorandum of understanding with Basra Textile Mills from Kenya to establish an integrated textile plant, with a proposed investment valued at around $25m under a potential public-private partnership.
The expansion of processing capacity is paired with an official target to increase domestic cotton production. By the 2026/2027 season, the government plans to harvest 532,000 tonnes of seed cotton, a 69% rise compared to the previous year.
Reducing reliance on imports remains a key challenge. Between 2019 and 2023, Burkina Faso imported nearly 39,000 tonnes of clothing and accessories annually, costing roughly CFA Fr18.65bn each year, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Demography (INSD).
