Accenture Shares Rise 6% Premarket Following $1 Billion AI Safety Partnership With Anthropic

Accenture (NYSE:ACN) shares climbed approximately 6% in premarket trading on Monday after Anthropic announced an agreement under which the IT services company will lead independent safety evaluations of its artificial intelligence models.

The partnership, announced on 18 September, involves plans for both companies to invest at least $1 billion each over five years to expand independent AI evaluation capacity.

Anthropic will also directly fund Accenture's evaluation work.

Faculty to Lead AI Model Safety Assessments

The initiative will be led by Faculty, Accenture's specialist artificial intelligence business.

Its responsibilities will include evaluating AI models, conducting adversarial testing known as red-teaming, assessing alignment with intended objectives and testing safeguards designed to reduce potential risks.

Under the proposed approach, independent assessors will work within AI companies and receive access to models and development processes.

This access is intended to allow evaluators to examine safety practices, verify whether companies are meeting their stated commitments and identify potential weaknesses.

Anthropic said the framework is designed to support independent assessments while providing evaluators with the information needed to conduct detailed reviews.

Companies Plan Long-Term Investment in AI Evaluation

Accenture and Anthropic each expect to invest at least $1 billion over the next five years to expand the capacity available for independent AI assessments.

The arrangement will not be exclusive. Anthropic intends to collaborate with other evaluation providers, while Accenture will be able to offer comparable services to additional AI developers.

Anthropic also highlighted the absence of established industry standards governing how external evaluators should access AI systems, report their findings or receive funding.

The company indicated that longer-term financing arrangements could eventually involve pooled industry resources or government funding.

Details of the evaluation framework remain under development, and Anthropic expects its approach to change as the AI industry and its safety practices evolve.
