What Happened?

Xenon Pharmaceuticals (XENE) stock is under pressure after the company paused enrollment in its Phase 3 psychiatry studies for major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder.

The company said it saw higher rates of neuropsychiatric side effects in these trials, including confusion, somnolence, ataxia, and rare cases of psychosis.

Xenon plans to adjust dosing, either through titration or lower doses, to improve patient tolerance before resuming enrollment.

The company's X-NOVA2 trial for major depressive disorder had already enrolled 80% of its target 450 patients, and results are still expected in Q1 2027. Xenon will decide whether to resume the depression and bipolar trials after seeing those results.

Wall Street reacted quickly. Needham cut its price target on Xenon Pharmaceuticals stock to $60 from $78, while keeping a Buy rating.

The firm removed all sales projections for major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder from its model for AZK, the drug candidate at the center of these studies.

Needham's new price target now reflects only AZK's potential in epilepsy, not psychiatry.

The firm also flagged uncertainty over whether dosing changes can reduce these side effects while keeping the drug effective.

Other analysts have also weighed in.

Deutsche Bank downgraded Xenon Pharmaceuticals stock from Buy to Hold and slashed its price target from $90 to $46, citing safety concerns.

On the more optimistic side, H.C. Wainwright kept its Buy rating and $74 price target, noting that a pre-NDA meeting with the FDA raised no concerns about inadequate drug exposure levels.

Analyst price targets on Xenon Pharmaceuticals stock now range from a low of $46 to a high of $100, showing just how split opinions are on where this goes from here.
