RWE to develop 400MW battery system at Moerdijk power station

RWE has made a final investment decision (FID) to build a 400MW/1.1GW-hour battery storage system at its Moerdijk power station in Noord-Brabant, the Netherlands.
The company expects construction to begin shortly, with commissioning scheduled for the second quarter of 2028 (Q2 2028).
The planned battery installation, comprising 208 lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery containers, is intended to supply grid support equivalent to the evening peak demand of around 500,000 households for up to three hours.
The facility will connect to the Dutch national electricity grid using existing infrastructure at the Moerdijk site.
Through an agreement with transmission system operator TenneT, the battery will be deployed to manage electricity flows, potentially making additional grid capacity available for users currently on waiting lists.
TenneT and regional grid operator Enexis are set to evaluate the impact of the battery storage project as part of a broader congestion management review planned for December 2026.
The Moerdijk battery will also be equipped to deliver advanced grid services including instantaneous reserve.
The site already hosts a smaller synthetic inertia battery connected to the continental European grid with a capacity of 7.5MW/11MW-hours (MWh).
RWE Generation SE CEO Nikolaus Valerius said: "This battery marks a major milestone for reliable power supply and grid relief in Noord-Brabant.
"As one of the largest and most powerful battery systems in the Netherlands, it will be capable of covering the evening peak demand of around 500,000 households for almost three hours.
"At the same time, it can absorb surplus electricity from the grid within seconds. Battery storage plays a crucial role in building a resilient energy system that can accommodate a growing share of renewables."
The project is linked to the integration of renewable energy from the 795MW OranjeWind offshore wind development, a joint initiative by RWE and TotalEnergies.
The new battery is expected to store excess electricity from wind production and release it when needed, helping balance supply and demand and optimising the use of renewable resources.
RWE currently operates two battery storage systems in the Netherlands, with an additional 35MW/41MWh installation at Eemshaven.
Globally, RWE runs battery systems totalling approximately 1.7GW and has 3GW under construction.
In July 2026, RWE's Nordseecluster A offshore wind farm delivered electricity to the German grid for the first time following the installation of its initial turbine.
"RWE to develop 400MW battery system at Moerdijk power station" was originally created and published by Power Technology, a GlobalData owned brand.
