Starbucks signed an agreement with the Tamil Nadu state government to establish a global capability center in Chennai, with plans to bring on around 800 technology workers, the state government announced Monday.
The government did not disclose the size of the investment. According to a state government press release, Starbucks technology chief Anand Varadarajan cited Chennai's deep talent pool, lower employee turnover rates, and strong infrastructure as key factors behind the location decision.
Chennai already hosts technology centers for global firms including Citi, Barclays, and American Express, and accounts for about a tenth of India's total global capability center base, according to Reuters. The Starbucks announcement follows a similar agreement signed earlier this week by U.S. pharmacy chain Walgreens, which also chose Tamil Nadu for a global capability center.
A 2026 report by research firms Nasscom and Zinnov found that India now leads the world in global capability centers, with upward of 2,100 such facilities collectively employing around 2.36 million people and producing nearly $100 billion in revenue. According to Reuters, these centers have evolved well past routine administrative tasks, with companies now relying on them for more sophisticated work such as software engineering, financial operations, and research and development.
Starbucks operates roughly 500 cafes in India through a joint venture with Tata Consumer Products. The Chennai technology hub represents a separate expansion of the company's operational footprint in the country.
The Chennai announcement comes as Starbucks pursues a broader growth strategy following what chief executive officer Brian Niccol declared a completed two-year turnaround of the company. Niccol said the chain has returned to growth, with global comparable store sales rising 7.9% in its fiscal third quarter ended June 28. The company has also restructured its China business through a new joint venture with Boyu Capital, with ambitions to expand that market's store count from 8,000 to as many as 20,000 locations over time.
