HBM Sold Out Through 2027. Micron’s Customers Are Begging. Can Anything Go Wrong?

Quick Read

  • Micron (MU) locked in ~$100 billion in take-or-pay contracts and $22 billion in customer deposits, yet still can only fill half of AI customers' HBM demand.

  • HBM scarcity now bottlenecks NVIDIA (NVDA) accelerator shipments, making memory the single binding constraint on the entire AI buildout.

  • The bear case: Samsung, SK Hynix, and China's CXMT are racing to add HBM capacity, and every past commodity supercycle felt permanent at the top.

  • Just released. Our analysts combed the entire stock market and named the ten best stocks to buy right now, and Micron Technology didn't make the cut. Enter your email to see the names that beat MU. The report is free. Enter your email and see if any of your stocks made the cut.

Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU) has become the most improbable trillion-dollar story of the AI buildout. Shares closed at $1,015.80, up 502.43% over the past year, and the market capitalization now sits near $1.147 trillion.

24/7 Wall St.

That valuation prices in an industry defined by boom and bust for forty years. The question worth asking is whether the AI cycle actually broke that pattern or is simply running the wildest version of it.

Management insists the answer has changed. CEO Sanjay Mehrotra told investors that "the memory industry has been structurally transformed by the proliferation of AI" and that supply tightness will persist beyond calendar 2027. The order book, contracts, and margins all support him, although history does not.

Sold Out, and Paid to Prove It

Fiscal third-quarter revenue reached $41.46 billion, up 345.72% year over year at a non-GAAP gross margin of 84.9%, a margin profile that says pricing power, not volume, is doing the work.

Management guided the September quarter to $50.0 billion in revenue, a single quarter larger than the company's fiscal 2024 full-year total.

Micron has now signed 16 Strategic Customer Agreements, mostly five-year take-or-pay contracts covering roughly 20% of our DRAM volume and a third of NAND, with cumulative minimum-price revenue near $100 billion.

Customers are also wiring in $22 billion of cash deposits and letters of credit. Mehrotra was blunt on scarcity: Micron can fill only half to two-thirds of its biggest AI customers' demand.

Where the Peers Sit on the Same Trade

NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) sits on the buy side of the same table. Its shares are up 26.42% over the past year, a fraction of Micron's move, because HBM scarcity is now the binding constraint on accelerator shipments.

Western Digital (NASDAQ:WDC) rides the same AI data wave without HBM exposure. Fiscal fourth-quarter revenue grew 43.84% at a 54.4% gross margin, respectable numbers that look pedestrian next to Micron's.

CEO Irving Tan framed the tailwind plainly: "Virtually every AI workload, from training, inference, agentic AI to physical AI, creates data that is stored persistently and cost-efficiently on HDDs."

Bull and Bear Case for MU Stock

The bull case rests on the contracts. Mehrotra said the SCA floor prices deliver "a very robust gross margin for Micron, well above our peak quarterly margins in any past cycle." If that holds, the forward multiple of 7 is absurdly cheap.

MU Price Target — 24/7 Wall St.

The bear case is Samsung and SK Hynix racing to add HBM capacity, plus new fabs from China's CXMT that Barron's flagged as a growing supply overhang. Insider activity is currently selling, and every past commodity supercycle felt permanent at the top. The AI infrastructure trade extends well beyond memory, and we mapped seven suppliers powering the data-center buildout, from electricity to cooling, in a free report you can grab here.

MU Analyst Ratings — 24/7 Wall St.

The deciding variable is calendar 2028. Mehrotra conceded Micron does "not have line of sight as to when memory supply will be able to catch up." If rival HBM lines slip, the SCAs print money. If they arrive on time, the market will remember what memory used to be.
