What Happened?

Accenture (ACN) shares jumped after the company announced a major new partnership with Anthropic.

Both companies agreed to invest at least $1 billion over the next five years into what they're calling "building capacity" in AI safety evaluation.

Anthropic named Accenture as its first embedded evaluator, a key part of CEO Dario Amodei's plan to slow down the pace of frontier AI development.

Under the deal, Anthropic will embed employees from Faculty, Accenture's specialist AI business, directly into Anthropic's operations.

Their job will be to test safety measures, red-team AI models, and check whether the models act in line with human values.

Anthropic said that given the "importance and urgency" of the work, it will fund Accenture's efforts directly for now.

Long term, the company said it believes funding for this kind of work should come from pooled or government sources, something it called for in its Advanced AI Framework back in June.

Since neither option exists yet, Anthropic said it plans to work with different evaluators under different funding setups.

The partnership isn't exclusive either. Anthropic is also in talks with the research nonprofit METR and other potential partners.

This all comes right after Amodei published a three-step plan over the weekend aimed at slowing down how fast AI companies push their most advanced models forward.

The first step calls for giving outside evaluators employee-level access so they can verify safety practices and report problems.

Amodei said Anthropic has already committed to this step, and he's encouraging other AI companies to follow suit.

Anthropic made clear that bringing in outside evaluators doesn't reduce its own responsibility for the safety of its models.

The company said it's sharing these early steps publicly so people and other AI developers can watch how the process unfolds.
