Iran “Offered” to Reopen the Strait of Hormuz. These Stocks Could Be the Biggest Winners

Quick Read

  • United (UAL) and Delta (DAL) gained under 2% on the Strait reopening headline, which rests on a single unnamed source with unmet U.S. conditions.

  • Royal Caribbean (RCL) fell 6% while JETS edged up, signaling the market reads cruise weakness as a consumer-risk story, not a fuel story.

  • A similar de-escalation deal in June briefly crashed Brent and rallied airlines before collapsing entirely, making tanker transit data the deciding variable now.

  • Just released. Our analysts combed the entire stock market and named the ten best stocks to buy right now, and Delta Air Lines didn't make the cut. Enter your email to see the names that beat DAL. The report is free. Enter your email and see if any of your stocks made the cut.

The report landed with conditions attached. A senior Iranian official told a Japanese news agency that Tehran could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days, provided Washington begins ending its blockade of Iranian ports and its military operations. That is a single unnamed source, and American networks said they could not independently verify it.

Crude drifted lower on the headline. For anyone holding airlines or cruise operators, a durable reopening would take a structural bid out of a crude market that has been pressuring operating margins all year.

The market is pricing a possibility here, though it's still a low one.

What Was Actually Said, and by Whom

The Iranian official said reopening the strait was conditional on American concessions that have not begun. No formal negotiation channel has been confirmed, and the statement came through a single unnamed source rather than an official Iranian government release.

WTI closed at $107.02 on September 15, after trading in the mid $80s in late August. That is the fuel backdrop against which any relief would be measured, and it is why a credible reopening would matter to travel operators.

The de-escalation headline did not arrive alone. Reporting the same day carried that the U.S. Treasury moved to cut Iranian airlines off from the dollar system, that Houthi forces seized an island near another critical strait, and that American diesel hit a record price.

How the Supposed Winners Actually Traded

The airlines finished modestly higher. United Airlines (NASDAQ:UAL) closed at $115.21, up 0.72%. Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL) added 1.73% to $83.93. American Airlines (NASDAQ:AAL) gained 0.29% to $13.61. The U.S. Global Jets ETF (NYSEARCA:JETS) barely moved, up 0.34% to $29.11.

Cruise lines moved the other way. Royal Caribbean (NYSE:RCL) fell 6.17% to $234.81, and Carnival slipped 0.13% to $22.28.

Over one week, United is up 7.75%, American 6.58%, Delta 6.38%, and JETS 4.45%, while Royal Caribbean is down 5.21%. The market bought airlines on softer crude and sold cruise lines regardless, which tells you the cruise trade is about consumer risk rather than a fuel story.

If Hormuz does open, airline stocks could be the biggest winners, and so could cruise stocks. That said, it needs to stay open for long enough for the oil "glut" to happen. That could take years, since countries also need to refill their reserves.

When a similar de-escalation headline hit in June, the airline complex ran hard, and Brent collapsed. That deal later fell apart, which is the sentence anyone repeating the current headline should read twice.

Airline equities historically perform best when oil is high but already falling, which is precisely the setup here. The counterparties in that trade are producers and refiners, and two refiners were downgraded to Hold as this cycle turned.

Bull and Bear Case for JETS ETF

JETS is a diversified airline fund covering multiple carriers. Net assets stood at roughly $959 million as of June 30, with American at 11.30%, United at 11.07%, Southwest at 10.65%, and Delta at 10.50%.

Bull case: fuel is the largest controllable line for these carriers, and a genuine Hormuz reopening pulls a persistent bid out of crude. United management said the recent fuel spike alone was worth about $1.12 of EPS, so rerating operating margin against a reversal would be material.

Bear case: the offer is unverified, conditioned on concessions Washington has not made, and the June deal already collapsed once. Jet fuel is a refined product whose crack spread does not always follow crude, and carrier fuel hedges delay whatever benefit eventually arrives.

The deciding variable is tanker transit counts through the strait inside the next week. If shipping data does not confirm what the official said, this remains only a headline.
