How much money should you have by the time you turn 30? Social media has made it much harder to know what's normal. Scroll through enough finance posts and you'll quickly find people claiming to have $500,000, $1 million or even more before their 30th birthday, leaving plenty of others wondering if they're already falling behind.
That question sparked a debate on Reddit after one person asked what net worth deserves an "A+" grade at age 30. They suggested $500,000, arguing it would put most people on track for a very comfortable financial future.

But with the median net worth for U.S. households under age 35 sitting at just $39,000, many commenters wondered whether expectations have become completely detached from reality.
Is Half a Million Really the New Standard?
The discussion quickly split into several camps.
Many argued that having between $100,000 and $200,000 by age 30 is already exceptional. Several pointed to the commonly cited benchmark of having roughly one year's salary saved by that age.
Others believed the bar should be much higher.
"I'd say $500k would be A+ for 30 years old," one commenter wrote, saying it gives investments decades to compound and puts someone in an excellent financial position.
Some thought even that wasn't enough.
"Probably a million+," another person wrote. "A+ is basically the absolute top of the range."
Ironically, the thread also showed how easy it is to feel poor no matter how much money you have. One 33-year-old with roughly $300,000 admitted, "I feel like I'm behind," despite having a net worth that is many times higher than the national median.
Others tried to bring the conversation back to reality.
"The funny thing about money is that there is always a higher number to be achieved," one commenter wrote.
Net Worth Doesn't Tell the Whole Story
Many of the most popular replies argued that a single net worth number can be misleading, especially at age 30.
One commenter compared a teacher with $100,000 saved to a final-year medical resident carrying roughly $400,000 in student debt. While the teacher technically has the higher net worth today, many pointed out the doctor's earning potential could dramatically change that picture within just a few years.
Others argued people spend too much time focusing on cutting expenses instead of increasing income.
"Pursue a path to a higher wage," one commenter wrote after explaining that earning substantially more changed the way they thought about saving.

Several people also pointed out that luck and circumstances play a much bigger role than many are willing to admit. Family wealth, scholarships, housing appreciation, inheritances, stock market gains and career choice can all dramatically affect net worth by age 30.
One of the most effective ways to build wealth is by investing in technologies that could shape the future. That's one reason investors are watching Immersed, which is building technology for the future of work through spatial computing.
Known for its AR/VR productivity platform that enables users to work across multiple virtual screens, the company has grown to more than 1.5 million users worldwide. Immersed is also developing Visor, a lightweight headset designed specifically for professional productivity, positioning the company at the intersection of remote work, extended reality and next-generation computing. You can buy shares today for $0.79 each, with the opportunity to receive up to 20% in bonus shares.
The thread ultimately highlighted something that financial experts often warn about: comparing yourself with strangers online is usually a losing game. Even people with $600,000, $1 million or more admitted they still felt behind because someone else always seemed to have more.
Building Wealth Across More Than Just the Market
Building a resilient portfolio means thinking beyond a single asset or market trend. Economic cycles shift, sectors rise and fall, and no one investment performs well in every environment. That's why many investors look to diversify with platforms that provide access to real estate, fixed-income opportunities, precious metals, and even self-directed retirement accounts. By spreading exposure across multiple asset classes, it becomes easier to manage risk, capture steady returns, and create long-term wealth that isn't tied to the fortunes of just one company or industry.
