Rivian Sinks 8% Despite Q2 Beat and Raised Guidance; Lucid Falls 6%

Quick Read

  • Rivian fell 8% in a sell-the-news move despite gross profit of $179M crushing the $71M estimate, pulling Lucid down 6% in sympathy.

  • The DRIV autonomous and EV ETF held flat while EV stocks sold off because chip names like NVIDIA and Qualcomm dominate its holdings over pure-play EV brands.

  • A $1.3 billion equity raise and R2 ramp costs pressure Rivian shares even as management raises delivery guidance to between 65,000 and 70,000 units.

Electric vehicle stocks are cracking mid-morning Friday, and the surprise is Rivian (NASDAQ:RIVN). Rivian stock is down 8% to $15.53 after the company reported a clear Q2 2026 beat and raised full-year guidance. The reaction looks like classic sell-the-news, since Rivian shares had jumped 4% after hours Thursday.

The pain is spreading. Lucid (NASDAQ:LCID) stock is down 6% to $7.63 with no company-specific catalyst, while Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) stock is holding up better, down less than 1% to $307.98. The Global X Autonomous & Electric Vehicles ETF (NASDAQ:DRIV) is flat at $33.55, a reminder that thematic diversification softens single-name blowups.

For investors watching Rivian and its EV peers, the setup tells a familiar story. Strong fundamentals aren't enough when Rivian stock has already priced in the beat and the balance sheet just absorbed fresh dilution.

Rivian's Q2 Beat Was the Cleanest in Quarters

Rivian delivered revenue of $1.66 billion, up 27% year over year, topping the roughly $1.54 billion consensus. Rivian's adjusted loss came in at $0.47 per share versus the roughly $0.65 expected, with the GAAP loss at $0.63. Rivian's gross profit of $179 million blew past a Street estimate near $71 million.

Rivian's cash burn also improved. The automaker's adjusted EBITDA loss narrowed to $379 million versus the roughly $548 million expected and last year's $667 million loss. Rivian's net loss narrowed to $837 million, and Rivian delivered 12,194 vehicles from its Normal, Illinois plant.

Furthermore, Rivian's management raised the full-year delivery target to 65,000 to 70,000 units, tightened the adjusted EBITDA loss range to $1.8 billion to $2 billion, and trimmed capex. Rivian ended the quarter with about $5.3 billion in cash and total liquidity above $14 billion once the Department of Energy loan and Volkswagen investments are counted.

Why RIVN Stock Is Falling Anyway

There isn't a clean negative catalyst, so today's Rivian stock move reads as profit-taking on a stock that had already re-rated into the print. The reversal from Thursday's after-hours gain to an 8% intraday drop suggests fast money booking gains.

Rivian also has real overhangs. The company completed a roughly $1.3 billion follow-on equity raise in July, which is dilutive on a share count already near 1.44 billion. Near-term R2 ramp costs (roughly $100 million in Q2 with more inefficiencies flagged for Q3) plus a richer commercial-van and R2 mix are pressuring average selling prices.

Management also flagged supply chain risks, hyperscalers absorbing DRAM memory supply, and China export controls. None of those are new, but they give traders a reason to lock in gains after the report. The R2 midsize SUV, priced around $58,000 and positioned against Tesla's Model Y, is still tracking toward positive gross margin by year-end.

Lucid Falls in Sympathy, Tesla Outperforms

Lucid has no company-specific news today, and its decline looks like sympathy selling within the EV group. Lucid stock had climbed 26% in the prior week after a Saudi royal disclosed a 5% passive stake, so some profit-taking is unsurprising.

Tesla stock is the relative outperformer, down 0.9%. Tesla shares are still 32% lower year to date (YTD), so today's shallow drop reflects a market that already de-rated the name earlier this summer.

DRIV Shows the Value of Diversification

Global X Autonomous & Electric Vehicles ETF is essentially unchanged while its highest-profile pure-play names sell off. Tesla is the fund's largest EV holding at 2.28%, with Lucid at just 0.49%, and Rivian isn't currently a holding at all.

DRIV's largest positions skew toward chip and platform names like Intel (NASDAQ:INTC), Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM), and NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA), which explains why the ETF prints flat on a rough EV day. With net assets around $477 million, DRIV is a small, thematic, non-leveraged fund that concentrates on the autonomous and electrification supply chain rather than the loudest brand names.

What to Watch Now

The next signal for Rivian shares is whether the sub-$16 print holds into the afternoon or breaks lower on continued profit-taking. Analyst notes reacting to the raised guidance and the R2 conversion commentary can shape sentiment through Monday.

For Lucid stock, investors can watch for whether the sympathy move deepens or reverses. Given the recent 21% one-month gain, more give-back is plausible. Position sizes should stay modest here on both names.

The broader takeaway is that a beat and raise doesn't guarantee a green day when a stock has run into the report and the capital structure just widened. Rivian's Q2 was strong on the numbers, but the market is asking whether that's already baked into the share price.
