Strategy lost $8.22 billion in Q2, but stock rose 4.4% anyway, here is why market is not worried

On July 30, 2026, Strategy reported an $8.22 billion net loss for Q2. The diluted loss per share came in at $24.45, against analyst estimates of $2.19 per share. That is not a miss. That is a miss by a factor of more than ten.

And yet Strategy shares closed at $97.74 on the day, up 4.41 percent.

That gap between the reported loss and the stock price reaction is the story. The market was not confused. It was reading a different set of numbers than the headline.

Why the loss is not what it looks like

Almost all of Strategy's Q2 operating loss, which was $8.33 billion, was an accounting entry, not a cash outflow. Under FASB's fair-value accounting rules, which Strategy adopted in 2025, the company must mark its Bitcoin holdings to market at the end of every quarter. Bitcoin fell during Q2.

That fall produced an $8.32 billion unrealised loss on the balance sheet, a paper figure that reverses automatically if Bitcoin rises in Q3.

No cash left the building. No Bitcoin was sold to cover the loss. The number that made national headlines is an accounting requirement, not a business failure.

The stock in context

Strategy holds 843,775 Bitcoin acquired for approximately $63.6 billion, at an average purchase price of $75,476 per coin, making it the world's largest corporate Bitcoin holder.

At today's Bitcoin price of approximately $64,000, the position carries an unrealized loss of roughly $9.7 billion, but that is paper, not permanent.

MSTR hit an all-time high of $543 on November 21, 2024. It fell to a 52-week low of $81.81 earlier this year. On earnings day it closed at $97.74, up 4.41 percent, before pulling back to approximately $90.80 today, July 31.

The 52-week high stands at $414.36. At current levels the stock is trading 83 percent below its all-time high and 11 percent above its 52-week low. Analysts covering MSTR maintain a Strong Buy rating with an average 12-month price target of $303.64, implying upside of over 210 percent from today's price.

Saylor said in the earnings release: "In the midst of this phase of muted Bitcoin sentiment and market skepticism, we continue to evolve our business model and establish Digital Credit as a new asset class."

What the market actually cares about

The stock rose because investors looked past the GAAP loss to two things: subscription revenue surged 54 percent year-over-year and the USD reserve now stands at $3.75 billion, approximately 25 months of preferred stock dividend coverage without selling a single Bitcoin.

The $8.22 billion number grabbed the headlines. The $3.75 billion reserve and the 54 percent software growth are what moved the stock.
