Clarksons Cashes In on Shipping Chaos - Moby

THE GIST

Every crisis needs someone selling maps, and right now global shipping is one giant, expensive fog. Clarksons just posted its best half-year ever, because knowing exactly where every ship in the world is headed has never paid better.

WHAT HAPPENED

Clarksons reported its strongest-ever first half on Tuesday, with revenue rising to £413.5 million from £297.8 million a year earlier, and underlying pre-tax profit climbing to a record £61.5 million from £39.4 million. Underlying basic earnings per share hit 147.6p. The shipping services group credited surging freight rates, disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, and strong performances in both its broking and financial divisions.

The company ended the period with £154.6 million in free cash resources. It raised its interim dividend to 35p per share, up from 33p, extending a 24-year streak of consecutive annual dividend growth, and now expects full-year results to land materially ahead of market forecasts.

Shares jumped as much as 9% on the news. Clarksons also announced three acquisitions, Link Group, Zuma Labs, and Serpac International, expanding into commodities, technology, and artificial intelligence.

The company is also navigating a leadership change. Longtime CFO Jeff Woyda is retiring, with Niamh Staunton stepping in as CFO and Harriet Oliver moving up to COO.

WHY IT MATTERS

One stock. Nvidia-level potential. 30M+ investors trust Moby to find it first. Get the pick. Tap here.

Clarksons doesn't own a single ship. It connects the shipowners, charterers, financiers, and traders who do, which means chaos in the shipping lanes turns directly into fees on Clarksons' books.

This year has delivered chaos in bulk. The Iran war, Hormuz disruption, attacks on shipping routes, and broader geopolitical instability have forced ships to reroute, voyages to stretch longer, and insurance and freight costs to climb. Consumers and supply chains are footing that bill. Shipbrokers are cashing the check, since clients need more advice, more market intelligence, and more help executing trades exactly when conditions get this volatile.

Clarksons picked a good moment to also go shopping. The commodities, tech, and AI acquisitions build out the same data and advisory muscle the company is leaning on right now, and the timing lines up with a shipping market that keeps getting more complicated, not less: sanctions, rerouting, emissions rules, commodity shocks, and conflict risk all raise the price of good information.

WHAT'S NEXT

Watch whether freight-market strength holds, whether Hormuz disruption eases, and whether full-year results land as far ahead of forecasts as management now expects.

The key tests: shipping rates, deal activity, acquisitions, cash generation, and dividend growth.
