Argentina's Shale Boom Is Reshaping Energy Security Across the Americas

Argentina's recent record unconventional oil and natural gas output from the Vaca Muerta shale is boosting energy security in the Americas. In a decade, shale oil and gas production has grown at a stunning clip to now comprise over 70% of Argentina's hydrocarbon output. This rapid growth will continue with the Vaca Muerta, which is still in the early stages of development, poised to become a leading shale oil and gas play that will bolster energy security in the Americas.
For June 2026, government data shows Argentina's oil production of 868,763 barrels per day was 2% lower month over month, but still a notable 12.6% greater than a year earlier. Natural gas output for the same period was 5.4 billion cubic feet per day. This was 1.2% lower than May 2026 and 3% less than the billion cubic feet reported for June 2025. While those numbers indicate oil and gas production declined for the month, hydrocarbon output was still significantly higher than a decade earlier.
Two years after the development of the Vaca Muerta began in earnest, in June 2016, Argentina lifted 500,580 barrels of crude oil and 4.4 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day. The significant growth in hydrocarbon production over the last decade, with crude oil output up by 74% and natural gas rising 23%, is because of the development of the Vaca Muerta shale formation. Indeed, by June 2026, shale oil comprised 71%, or 616,490 barrels per day, of Argentina's total petroleum output.
Shale gas for the same period made up 70%, or 3.8 billion cubic feet of natural gas output. This highlights the growing importance of shale oil and gas production in Argentina. Those numbers are especially important when it is considered that conventional petroleum production is in decline. June 2026, conventional oil production was a mere 252,273 barrels per day, which is a whopping 13% lower than the 290,924 barrels daily for the same period a year earlier.
It is the ongoing successful exploitation of the 8.6-million-acre Vaca Muerta shale that is responsible for Argentina's rising hydrocarbon output. Shale oil production hit a record high of 626,077 barrels per day during May 2026. This made unconventional oil responsible for 70.6% of Argentina's total petroleum output that month. Over the last year, petroleum production in the Vaca Muerta grew 28%, from 480,964 barrels per day for June 2025 to 616,490 barrels per day in June 2026.
While June 2026 shale oil output was 2% lower than a month prior, it constituted 71% of Argentina's total petroleum output. This is an all-time high, with it being significantly greater than the 62% reported a year earlier. Indeed, that ratio is rising at a steady clip not only because of higher production in the Vaca Muerta but also because Argentina's conventional oil production is in decline. Production from Argentina's conventional fields has peaked, with most now in decline.
There is a similar story when it comes to natural gas production. Between June 2025 and 2026, conventional natural gas output declined by a whopping 15% from 1.9 billion to 1.6 billion cubic feet per day. Yet, Argentina's overall output from June 2025 only dropped 3% from 5.6 to 5.4 billion cubic feet daily a year later. The strong growth of shale gas production is underpinning Argentina's overall natural gas output. You see, over the last year, shale gas went from comprising 66% of all production in June 2025 to 70% during June 2026.
The volume of hydrocarbons being produced in the Vaca Muerta and their proportion of Argentina's total energy output will continue growing at a steady clip. The shale play ranks among the top five globally, containing estimated technically recoverable resources of 16 billion barrels of oil and 308 trillion cubic feet of gas. Even more impressive is that the Vaca Muerta possesses geological characteristics that make it equal to or even superior to more prolific and developed U.S. shale plays.
The Vaca Muerta 's shale thickness, which boosts well productivity, is greater than most U.S. shale plays, with only the Delaware shale possessing greater thickness of up to 1,200 meters. Argentina's premier shale formation has a high organic content, which is only surpassed by the Delaware and Bakken shales. This is a particularly important characteristic because it indicates greater hydrocarbon potential and higher internal reservoir pressures, making it easier to extract the oil and gas captured in the shale.
Reservoir pressures are higher than all major U.S. shale plays, except Haynesville. This makes it easier and hence more cost effective to extract the shale oil and gas in the Vaca Muerta, while giving wells a longer productive lifespan than typically associated with shale oil wells. You see, typically, shale oil well production peaks rapidly, usually within the first six months, and then drops by up to 70% from initial output. That forces drillers to utilize costly enhanced recovery techniques such as gas injection and surfactant flooding to maintain production at commercial levels.
Those geological features indicate that Argentina's flagship shale play is more productive than most U.S. shales, with a potentially longer commercially viable lifespan. As a result, despite higher drilling and other operational costs in Argentina, the Vaca Muerta has an estimated breakeven price of $36 per barrel. This is equivalent to and even better than the major U.S. shale plays where the breakeven price for crude oil is $34 to $51 per barrel. Breakeven prices in the Vaca Muerta are expected to fall as further infrastructure is developed and brought online.
It is for these reasons that foreign energy companies continue to seek investment opportunities in what is shaping up to be one of the world's top shale oil and gas plays. The appeal of investing in the Vaca Muerta is further enhanced by the light sweet crude oil extracted from the formation, which has an API gravity of 39 to 42 degrees and less than 0.5% sulfur. Those characteristics make the petroleum extracted easier and cheaper to refine into high-quality low-emission fuels. This is an important attribute in a world focused on significantly reducing carbon emissions.
The Vaca Muerta has emerged as the engine of Argentina's economic recovery, transforming the chronically crisis-hit nation into a net energy exporter while reshaping energy security across the Americas. This is occurring at a crucial time with war in the Middle East closing the Strait of Hormuz, thereby disrupting global oil and gas supplies. These developments are elevating the strategic importance of the development of the Vaca Muerta, which alongside President Javier Milei's market-oriented reforms, provides Buenos Aires with a powerful source of economic growth.
