BITX Is Quietly Draining $1.2 Billion in Assets as the Leverage Trap Catches Traders Off Guard

Quick Read
-
BITX has collapsed 56% in 2026, more than doubling Bitcoin's 27% decline and cutting a $10,000 stake to roughly $4,400.
-
Daily leverage resets compound BITX's losses in volatile markets, meaning Bitcoin can end a period flat while BITX still loses money.
-
Watch whether Bitcoin holds $62,200 and BITX assets stay above $1 billion, as breaks on either signal deeper trouble ahead.

The 2x Bitcoin Strategy ETF (CBOE:BITX) has lost 55.86% of its value in 2026, turning a $10,000 stake at the start of the year into roughly $4,414 by Tuesday's close. Bitcoin itself is down 26.77% over the same stretch. That is the trade in one line: a 2x product, a Bitcoin drawdown of about a quarter, and a fund cut in half.
BITX, run by Volatility Shares, is the largest 2x leveraged Bitcoin futures ETF in the U.S. It aims to deliver twice the daily return of Bitcoin using futures and financing, and it currently holds $1.03 billion in net assets against $3.91 billion in total assets, a gross leverage footprint of roughly 3.8x. It is designed as a short-term trading vehicle.
The Year the Leverage Bit Back
Bitcoin opened 2026 at $87,497.94 and trades near $64,074 as of Wednesday. BITX opened the year at $27.52 and closed Tuesday at $12.15.
Stretch the window to one year and the gap widens. Bitcoin is down 43.85% since August 2025. BITX is down 77.58%. A $10,000 buy in BITX on August 4, 2025 is worth about $2,242 today.
The pain has also shown up in the flow numbers. Net assets stood at $2.25 billion in the March 24, 2026 fact sheet and had fallen to $1.03 billion by the May 31 NPORT filing, a combination of price damage and outflows.

Why 2x Rarely Means 2x
Leveraged ETFs like BITX reset their exposure every day. That daily reset is what lets the fund promise twice Bitcoin's move on any given session, and it is also what causes the fund to drift from a simple "2x Bitcoin" outcome over longer periods. In choppy markets, you can hold a 2x fund through a flat month and still lose money.
Bitcoin's June 2026 stretch is the textbook case. Bitcoin opened June at $73,575 and closed the month at $58,523.93, a decline of roughly 20%. Inside that move sat sharp single-day drops on June 5 and June 6, with the highest daily volumes of the summer. Every one of those swings resets BITX's leverage the next morning, compounding losses on the way down and requiring a bigger bounce to get back to even.
Inside the Portfolio
The mechanics show up on the balance sheet. Per the May 31, 2026 NPORT filing, BITX held three Treasury Bill positions totaling roughly 279% of net assets, financed by repurchase agreements with Clear Street worth roughly the same amount on the short side. A $347.2 million money market deposit account (33.57% of net assets) provides the liquidity buffer.
The actual Bitcoin exposure runs through futures. The filing shows a short position in the BTCM6 contract worth -$147.1 million and a small long in BTCN6, reflecting a mid-month roll between listed CME Bitcoin futures. Long-dated exposure is manufactured through futures rolls.
The Case Traders Still Make
The reason BITX averages heavy volume despite the decay math is simple: for active traders, 2x daily exposure to Bitcoin without a futures account or margin is a real convenience. On a green day for Bitcoin, the fund does what it says. Bitcoin rose 0.11% over the past month; BITX rose 7.55% over roughly the same window, and it has bounced 1% in the past week as spot has firmed near $64,000.
Volatility, for now, has cooled. The VIX closed Tuesday at 16.50, back in the normal 15-to-20 band after a brief spike to 20.66 on July 29. Quieter markets help leveraged products track their stated multiple more cleanly.
What to Watch Next
Two things matter from here. First, whether Bitcoin holds the $62,200 August floor set on August 1; a break there resets the decay clock. Second, whether BITX's asset base stabilizes above the $1 billion mark or continues bleeding toward levels where issuers historically consider reverse splits. Either would tell you which crowd, bulls or the exit line, is winning the argument on 2x Bitcoin.
