Dive Brief:
-
Continued demand for optical networking applications drove growth in the communications infrastructure and data center end market, "producing one of the fastest quarters of year-over-year revenue growth for an end market in our company history," GlobalFoundries' CEO Timothy Breen said on a Q2 earnings call Wednesday.
-
In June, the company completed its acquisition of Synopsys' ARC Processor IP Solutions business for $455 million, which Breen said will help advance GlobalFoundries' physical AI strategy.
-
GlobalFoundries also used a $375 million U.S. Department of Commerce award to start a spinoff called Quantum Technology Solutions, which will focus on scaling quantum industry manufacturing capabilities.
Dive Insight:
GlobalFoundries' strong Q2 results come as the demand for semiconductor manufacturing and data center build-outs shows no signs of abating. Like many technology companies, GlobalFoundries has jumped at the opportunity, inking deals this year with the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Department of Energy, Renesas Electronics Corp. and others.
Second-quarter revenue was up 9% sequentially, CFO Sam Franklin said on the earnings call, 89% of which came from manufacturing services. The company secured three strategic chiplet design contracts with Lockheed Martin and increased its 300-millimeter equivalent wafer shipments 8% sequentially.
Revenue from technology services, including intellectual property, licensing, software, reticles, nonrecurring engineering, expedite fees and other items, comprised about 11% of total revenue in Q2. Communications infrastructure and data center comprised 16%, increasing 20% sequentially.
"We continue to see strong momentum, accelerating customer demand, and revenue growth across our strategic growth drivers, including optical networking within the AI data center, where our differentiated silicon photonics and silicon germanium technologies are driving meaningful value for our customers," Tim Breen said on the call.
Quantum Technology Solutions represents "a paradigm shift that will define the next chapter of high-performance computing over the coming decade and beyond" and "enable the quantum industry to move from prototypes to high-volume production," Breen said.
"Just as CPUs, GPUs and AI ASICs define today's compute paradigm, we believe quantum processor units, or QPUs, will be an essential part of tomorrow's," he said. "Advanced semiconductor manufacturing built securely here in the U.S. will be essential for the scaling of this technology. Establishing the right production capability is now the critical enabler."
Breen said the quantum industry is only in its early stages, and he expects quantum-related revenue from manufacturing services to increase towards the end of the decade.
Regarding AI data centers, the company continues to "build momentum through new customer design wins and increasing engagement across the ecosystem," he said.
Last week, GlobalFoundries received a DOC letter of intent pledging up to $300 million to accelerate the development of next-generation silicon photonics technologies. "Silicon photonics and silicon germanium each play critical roles in optical networking systems and combined with data center power represent three high-quality, long-term secular growth drivers," Breen said.
