ABB invests in LevelTen Energy to support clean energy procurement

ABB has made a minority investment in LevelTen Energy, in addition to entering into a strategic partnership with the US-based clean energy marketplace and software provider.
LevelTen's platform facilitates transactions such as power purchase agreements (PPAs) and has enabled over 20GW of clean energy deals across more than 35 markets in North America and Europe. It serves a diverse group of industry participants including utilities, commercial and industrial companies, and large-scale technology firms.
Financial details of ABB's investment were not disclosed.
The partnership is intended to enhance ABB's energy and carbon advisory services by linking its expertise in electrification and energy management with LevelTen's procurement platform.
According to ABB, businesses face growing pressure to decarbonise and secure clean energy, but they struggle with grid reliability, high costs and complex procurement.
ABB electrification service division president Stuart Thompson said: "Our customers are under real pressure to reduce their carbon footprint while managing energy costs and maintaining reliable, 24/7 operations.
"One important piece missing from the solutions we provide today: a straightforward way to secure long-term clean energy at the right price. LevelTen Energy brings exactly that capability.
"Through the partnership, ABB will be able to extend its growing energy and carbon advisory services portfolio with renewable energy procurement capabilities, helping customers move from planning and implementation to ongoing optimisation and reporting."
ABB stated that regulatory changes and evolving corporate requirements are leading more organisations to seek solutions that both match renewable energy generation and consumption more closely and provide greater transparency.
The company's portfolio in areas such as microgrids, battery storage and sophisticated energy management is seen as complementary to LevelTen's expertise in contracting and environmental attribute certificate trading.
Thompson stated that the collaboration is expected to drive growth for both firms. ABB will gain access to LevelTen's network of clean energy projects and the latter will benefit from the Switzerland-based company's sector expertise and global reach.
LevelTen Energy CEO Bryce Smith said: "This strategic partnership will generate new clean energy solutions, allowing ABB's global customers to seamlessly tap into clean power, capacity and portfolio management tools. Together, we have a real opportunity to help even more customers decarbonise."
ABB made this investment through ABB Electrification Ventures, the venture capital arm of its Electrification business area. Since 2021, this arm has invested more than $110m in 18 start-ups.
Across the wider ABB Ventures group, ABB has put in over $500m since 2010 in companies related to its automation, electrification and motion business units.
