S&P 500 closes at record high as employers cut 23,000 jobs

The S&P 500 closed at a record high on Friday after the US government reported that employers unexpectedly cut 23,000 jobs last month.

Every major index saw a second straight week of gains, which included several fresh records. It marks a strong start to August following several weak months.

The S&P 500 rose 47.68 points, or 0.6pc, to 7,757.64, topping the all-time high it set on Tuesday. The benchmark index has been on a record run throughout the year.

The bond market reacted more strongly to the weaker signal on the jobs market, which can be seen as allowing the Federal Reserve more time before raising interest rates to fight inflation.

Technology stocks, with their big market values, did much of the heavy lifting for the broader market. They are often the heaviest weights determining the market's direction. Nvidia jumped 2.3pc and Broadcom rose 1.7pc.

It comes as one of Britain's biggest AI companies is planning to float in New York in a new blow to London's hopes of attracting tech listings.

London-based data centre company Nscale is preparing for a US initial public offering as soon as next month.

Nscale is targeting New York despite receiving vocal support from the UK Government. The move would prolong the struggles of the London Stock Exchange in attracting tech companies to list.

The company did not comment on its IPO plans.

The flotation could value Nscale, run by the Australian former cryptocurrency miner Josh Payne, at around $25bn (£19bn), according to tech news website The Information.

Founded two years ago, Nscale has former Facebook luminaries Sir Nick Clegg and Sheryl Sandberg on its board.

Nscale is touting potential contracts worth $51bn to entice investors ahead of the flotation, according to Bloomberg, although revenue in the second quarter was around $100m. While the flotation could be as early as September, the timeline could slip.

British tech companies including semiconductor giant Arm have chosen to list in the US instead of London.

Nscale, whose investors include Nvidia and Dell, recently raised $2bn in what was Europe's biggest ever "series C", or third stage, funding round.

If Nscale follows through with plans to go public in the US, it risks embarrassment for the Government.

Labour has championed the company as a centrepiece of Britain's AI boom. Mr Payne has described his company as "the only full stack sovereign AI infrastructure provider in the UK".

Lord Stockwood, the former investment minister, put pressure on local councillors to approve a "supercomputer" data centre being built by the company in Essex, saying the matter was a priority for former prime minister Sir Keir Starmer.

Kanishka Narayan, the AI minister, said in March that Nscale's funding was "in part as a result of the Government's support and convening".

The company has appeared to be preparing for a US flotation for some time. It hired Wall Street banker Alice Takhtajan, who had worked on a string of New York flotations, as its chief financial officer in December.

Company documents also contain references to registering securities under US stock market legislation.

Despite its London headquarters, only one of the four data centres it is building is based in Britain. Two are in Norway and one in the US. A project with OpenAI for a "Stargate" facility in the North East was put on hold earlier this year after OpenAI criticised Britain's high energy costs.

Nscale said this week that it was doubling office space in London.

A string of so-called AI infrastructure companies have listed in the US in recent years including Coreweave and Nebius amid booming demand from companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
