SpaceX (NASDAQ:SPCX) shares jumped 15.83% on Friday, August 7, extending a sharp recovery after gaining 6.14% in the previous session. Across the week, the stock advanced a combined 22.8%.
The rebound followed an exceptionally volatile period for SpaceX shares. On Wednesday, the stock had plunged almost 14%, marking its second-worst trading session since the company's IPO and sending the shares to an all-time closing low of $108.27.
The selloff followed quarterly results that disappointed investors, particularly around spending associated with artificial intelligence. Concerns surrounding the company's valuation were compounded by the approaching expiration of its first post-IPO lock-up period.
Lock-up expiry fails to trigger feared selloff
The first lock-up period covering 911.5 million SpaceX shares expired on Thursday. That represented roughly 43% more shares than the 638.9 million sold through the company's June IPO, creating concerns that early investors could use the opportunity to reduce their holdings.
Those fears have so far failed to translate into the anticipated wave of selling. Instead, SpaceX shares rebounded strongly across Thursday and Friday, reversing a substantial portion of Wednesday's decline.
Recent trading also suggests that an area around $105 may have emerged as near-term support for the stock. Buyers stepped in as the shares approached that level, helping fuel the subsequent two-session recovery.
Analyst targets point to upside but valuation remains speculative
Despite the recent volatility, analysts currently have an average price target of $231.40 for SpaceX. That implies potential upside of approximately 73.84% from the stock price used in the comparison.
However, the company continues to carry considerable valuation uncertainty. Much of the investment case depends on expectations for the future expansion of Starlink, artificial intelligence initiatives and the Starship programme rather than solely on established earnings and cash-flow fundamentals.
SpaceX also recorded a GAAP net loss for the latest quarter, reinforcing the importance of future growth assumptions in supporting its current market valuation.
The 22.8% weekly recovery therefore demonstrates both the strong investor appetite surrounding SpaceX and the highly speculative nature of the shares. While the rebound from record lows and analysts' price targets suggest substantial potential upside, the dramatic swings seen during the week underline the risks associated with expectations-driven valuations.
