But over the course of a decade, he quietly built a stake in Reddit (NYSE: RDDT) of about 12.2 million shares -- now worth close to $2 billion -- making him one of that company's largest individual shareholders. Regulatory filings around Reddit's 2024 initial public offering (IPO) showed that entities affiliated with Altman owned about 8.7% of the company, making him its third‑largest shareholder. Analysis of Reddit's filings plus Adweek's coverage suggests that OpenAI pays on the order of $70 million annually, with AI licensing contributing about 10% of Reddit's 2024 revenue. Multiyear contracts and remaining performance obligations disclosed in Reddit's 10‑K confirm that these agreements stretch into 2026 and 2027. And talks are underway to move toward more dynamic, usage‑based pricing as AI models rely even more heavily on Reddit's corpus.
For investors, Altman's Reddit windfall underscores three points: First, in the AI era, data owners can capture real economic value, not just chipmakers and model labs. Second, Altman's lack of OpenAI equity does not mean he lacks financial exposure to the AI boom; it's just expressed through side bets like Reddit.
