Turing, a Tokyo-based autonomous-driving startup, plans to open a U.S. office within the next year and is targeting a potential American stock listing within five years at a valuation of roughly $10 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Chief Executive Issei Yamamoto said the U.S. office will initially concentrate on data collection and research and development. "The U.S. is our next major target market after Japan," Yamamoto said, pointing to the large American presence of Japanese automakers as a key factor.
Instead of building cars or robotaxis, Turing focuses on developing the autonomous-driving software that powers them. The company aims to achieve mass production of driver-assistance software in Japan and the U.S. by 2030, and intends to introduce more sophisticated autonomous-driving systems for robotaxis in Japan on a similar timeline, according to the Journal.
Yamamoto said he expects Turing to break even around 2030 or 2031, when it intends to pursue an IPO — preferring a U.S. listing if the company's scale and revenue growth make one feasible.
Founded in 2021, Turing has partnerships with Japanese carmaker Subaru and auto-parts supplier Denso, both of which operate in the U.S. and other overseas markets. Denso is also an investor in the company. "If an OEM client sells a car in that market, it automatically brings our products to that country," Yamamoto said.
Turing competes with companies including Tesla, Waymo, and WeRide. Yamamoto said the startup is about three years behind Tesla in autonomous-driving technology and less than a year behind British startup Wayve, describing the gap as a "second-mover advantage."
On the hardware side, Turing currently relies on Nvidia for its full-scale AI training workloads but has begun testing graphics processing units from Advanced Micro Devices as it looks to reduce costs and avoid dependence on a single chip supplier. AMD Ventures, the corporate venture arm of AMD, is among Turing's investors. Yamamoto said the company plans to use funds from its latest financing round to purchase GPUs.
